Array / switch changes made outside of ViPR control

In the ViPR 1.1 installation and config guide it says the following:

"Avoid out-of-band changes to the physical environment"

"Once you have added a physical asset to the ViPR virtual appliance, avoid reconfigurations with management tools other than the ViPR interfaces."

But it does note state what the expected impact/s would be and what would need to happen if this did occur.

Can anybody explain what would happen? and is the outcome the same for ViPR 1.1 and 2.0?

Hi Stu8888,

The answer to your question really is "it depends on the management operation performed". It is hard to clearly outline every scenario and the potential outcome. For example, if a user runs a provisioning operation on a VMAX outside of ViPR while ViPR is also actively provisioning on the array, the outcome could potentially be of loss of data.

Having said that, there may be specific scenarios where a VMAX could be potentially shared btw ViPR and another provisioning tool (such as SYMCLI or your home grown scripts, etc) by carefully separating the FA ports, etc. If you have a specific scenario in mind, we could may be assist you more.
