Unity 550F- All drives except the OS drives are amber

We received this unit as off lease and when we power on the unit all the drives are amber and there are alerts for each drive in unisphere.

I have done a reinit on both SP, is it really possible that all the drives have failed in this unit?

what is the best way to test to make sure that the drives are actually bad?

Hello Memking,

Thanks for the drive log as it helps to see what is going on with the drive. What is needed to be done is to run a few commands to reset the status of the slot so that the drive can be read correctly. You will need to contact tech support to do this step as it is restricted to support and partners only. Here is the article number 000228732 that you can give support so that they can assist you as well as a link to the article. If you have support or partner access you can view the link. https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000228732

Hello Memking,

Were any drives added to your system after you received it? How many drives are in the system including the OS drives? What I would do is to power down the system. Once the system is powered down then I would pull both power supplies out the system and then reseat the drives that are showing amber. Once all drives have been reseated then I would reinsert the power supplies and power on the system.

25 drives including the os drives. unit was received with all drives installed, I have reseated all the drives and they all eventually turn amber again.

I have reset both Service Processors using svc_reinit and done a svc_reimage on both. the unit does not contain any licensing would this cause an issue like i am seeing?

I am thinking one or both of the SP are bad or something. This unit was sold to a customer and they sent it back saying all drives are bad.

On the system View of Unisphere when i click on one of the drives that are marked as bad there is no information listed for the drive at all, capacity shows 0.0GB and everything else except the slot number and WWN is blank.

Hello Memking,

I would check to make sure that the drives that are amber I would make sure that they are EMC drives and that the Part# on the drives matches drives that are on the support matrix for your unity 550. Here is a link to the support matrix so that you can check the drives. https://dl.dell.com/content/manual42003217-dell-unity-drive-and-oe-compatibility-matrix.pdf?language=en-us

UnityOS
5.3.1.0.5.008
9/13/2023

i removed all the drives to do an update but it wont let me, keeps giving me an error saying its the wrong format. Checked the SHA checksum and its fine also the time is correct. I guess it needs to be licensed to update it.
