When will venue 8 7840 get lollipop?

Just wondering as i just got mine, and thought dell said it was to come preloaded.

Nope.. KitKat.

Not trying to be a jerk or anything, but does Dell not provide enough funding to their mobile android department?

I say this because 1. its 2015 and you produced a "flagship" device that is broken at launch, at-least some of the features, and it's shipping with a version that has been shipping on other devices since early last year.

2. dell has the reputation of either not funding its android mobile division or not caring about it, to properly support even  their relatively new tablets. For example the forums at XDA are rather scathing of dells commitment to updates, so much so that they have a forum just for Dell tablets called, "legacy and low activity devices".

Rather embarrassing, considering how much effort was put into the "Camera's" on the 7840, only to have the cameras have the same quality of sensors found on phones from 5 years ago. Also the broken functionality for the distance / measurement feature, i mean you spent 1/3 of the CES coverage for the device talking about the cameras.

Also embarrassing is the volume controls still show a phone icon.

and also embarrassing that at CES they stated it would come shipped with Lollipop, only to find out its shipping with KitKat, and to be told by a dell member on this forum that it would be available in February, then in the same forum under a different thread, to find out that kitkat updates will be coming in February, and that Loli will likely be out in March.

All the effort put into the basically garbage 3d cameras, should have been sunk into funding the software side, instead of rushing out junk with old software.

The moral of the story seems to be, Dell will be a "legacy and low activity device", manufacturer until it decides it wants to be serious or just keep on dropping the ball.

I now have very little to no expectations from dell, which will allow me to be surprised if anything ever comes to fruition.

just got the new over air update an hour ago.

The screen rotation delay issue seems to be fixed.---> nope, takes sometimes a turn and a return to get it to rotate still. It performs 100% when holding it perfectly upright, but its hit or miss anything other then perfectly vertical or horizontal.

They actually took the phone icon off of the speaker volume.. changed it to a speaker.

No loli, but did not expect.

No fix for the measurement tool, still not working.

When doing the update, after the reboot, a green android character pops up showing the update process.. But the text under the android character is in some kind of Asian language i don't understand.

No fix for the really really under performing back camera, not sure if any software can fix the Sh#t sammitch of a camera sensor.

chrome browsing seems peppier.. not sure though.

At-least its a small step in the right direction.

Just picked up my 2013 Nexus 7 with loli, its very fast, super responsive to screen rotation and it just works and it has wireless charging with a better camera.. Dell, any body listening lol.

Too bad the screen is not as good or as big..

The only accessory i could find was a case from china...thx dell.

Props on dell for making a s3xy thin tablet with nearly no bezel on 3/4 of the device.. but for $400... i feel like a Guinea pig.

Nope.. KitKat.

The current goal is to provide this in March.  However, this could push out if any issues are encountered during the validation efforts.  You will likely see one more Kit Kat OTA between now and then.

The latest OTA should have enabled the measurement tool.  Do you still see this grayed out?  Please confirm if your Build number under Settings ->About tablet->Build number is BBP803A138500DEL

Also, the Chinese characters will appear during every OTA.  This can be changed by doing a factory data reset (save all your pictures/files first!).  It does not impact the functionality of your tablet.  So, if the characters do not bother you...there is no need to reset.

Try clearing the cache:

1) Go to Settings -> Apps -> Gallery

2) Clear data and cache.

Check if your measurement feature is enabled.
