Venue Pro 11 (7130) : Replacement SSD?

Does anyone know if you can replace the SSD in a Venue Pro 11 (7130) and if so where you can get them from?

I had the same problem and after searching internet forums for months that related to a replacement SSD for my Dell Venue 11 Pro, I have found a solution that so far is working as well as the original SanDisk. I purchased a 512GB, Transcend, MTS600 P/N - TS512GMTS600, that I cloned from the factory drive using Acronis True Image 2014. BTW, cloning only worked after disabling the default enabled file encryption. Hope this is the solution for you too.

Yes you can, it is one of the features of the 7130 (replaceable SSD and Battery) but as to where one can be bought, I'm not sure.

I'm planning on buying one as well. Can u please tell us the exact procedure to clone the new ssd. How to transfer the os to the new ssd

I'll do my best to explain it;

  • You will need the following, True Image (latest software version), An external USB - HDD drive reader (mine is the Thermaltake BlaX), an adapter for the SSD that you purchased to be able to insert it into the USB - HDD reader and successfully clone the SSD.  At the same time I ordered my replacement SSD from Amazon I also included the StarTech.com M.2 SSD to 2.5in SATA Adapter Converter with Open Frame Housing and 7mm Height (SAT32M225)     .
  • After all items are received.......
  • Get to Control panel
  • Then click on System & Security
  • Then click on Bit Locker Drive Encryption
  • When Bit Locker comes up, click on turn off Bit Locker.  This process may take awhile to turn it off and will be the only method to be able to successfully clone the SSD.
  • After the Bit Locker process has completed, run True Image and clone the installed SSD to the new SSD, using the USB - HDD reader.
  • When the replacement drive has been successfully installed, turn Bit Locker back on.

Hi again,

I ordered the 256 GB SSD drive and the following in order to clone the new SSD [View:www.amazon.com/.../ref=sr_1_2] I just have a question... I can't find bitlocker in security. I heard it's only available for wind 8.1 pro and enterprise. do I still need to disable anything ??

Hi, Yasser,

I did not know that.  I am also unsure if there is an equivalent program in Windows 8.0.  Should your Windows be a version less than 8.0, then I am sure there is not encryption enabled unless it was pre-configured that way from the tablet provider.

Should you attempt to clone the drive using Acronis True Image and it fails; mine failed by just restarting the tablet without beginning the clone program upon restart.  Should something of that nature happen, then there may still be an encryption program running in Windows 8.0.

When I couldn't successfully clone the drive, I had to expend a bit of time researching on the Acronis website as to why the drive would not clone.  Finally I found the Acronis white paper that identified that it was because bitlocker was enabled.  Thus, a bit of research may be in your future also.

I Hope this answer helps with this potential problem....

Hi again,

So i replaced the new SSD and everything works like a charm except for the following. windows can't encrypt the new SSD (Device encryption is temporarily suspended) and the second thing i feel a little bit of lag. any suggestions?

December 22nd, 2014 08:00

Hi Yasser,

I kind of remember receiving the temporary suspension message, but then I did not have a problem with re-encrypting the drive at some point.  I do remember a lag after cloning for a period of time.  If I remember correctly, at the time it might have been Bit Locker preparing the cloned drive to be able to be re-encrypted.

I have not experienced any lag with my Venue to date.  Though I use a program to keep my Venue running smoothly that has been compatible with Windows 8 and 8.1.  I use Iolo's, System Mechanic Professional and also run Disk Cleanup and Defragment from time to time.

Hope this helps any, Dan

Thanks Dan. I will have to wait then regarding re-encrypting the new SSD.

Ok I tried to clone the SSD.

But afterwards I can not boot from it. (Windows 10 comes with boot device problem message or something like that)

Do I first have to format the SSD before cloning it.

I disabled Bit locker before cloning.

Normally I would say do not assume because it makes an A$$ out of U and ME. But you are completely correct with the rest.

Maybe I have to go back to Win 8.1, then clone and then return to Win 10.

Ohh big pain in the A$$.

I'll make a couple of assumptions in my answer.  You are using Acronis True Image and that you have upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 8 or 8.1.  If you are using True Image, you shouldn't need to preformat the SSD before cloning it.  True Image will perform that function during the cloning process after asking for a restart.

At the time I cloned my SSD, I was running Windows 8.1 Pro.  I do not have the level of expertise to determine if Windows 10 would not allow the successful cloning to your new drive.  Though I have since performed the free upgrade to Windows 10 on my tablet and it seems to operate just fine.

Sorry I could not be of more help with your issue.

That may work.  Agreed, it will be a pain.  Microsoft allows you one month to revert, or restore back to 8.1.  I have had to do that several times on other systems I own that wouldn't activate with Windows 10.  I hope that will allow for a smoother cloning of the SSD.
