Venue 8 Windows 8.1 - Can't update Windows or log into Microsoft account

I haven't had this Venue long (did buy it used to play with) but it seemed to work ok at first.  Then one day it would not play a video file that it had played successfully before, and said that it needed to update the app - only to find out I cannot log into the app store, because i cannot log into Microsoft or run any of the Microsoft updates.  I'm no computer dummy (though I am new to Win 8), but spent a couple of hours on this last night to no avail, very frustrating.  In the course of my research I tried updating drivers from the Dell site, but after downloading them they would not install, and now my tablet will only display in portrait view, won't switch to landscape.  Could be unrelated i suppose, but didn't help my frustration level.  any advice appreciated.  I would consider re-installing Windows but I don't think i can even access recovery since I can't sign in?

For anyone who may stumble across this thread later, I seem to have fixed my problems. Much of it comes down to being unfamiliar with Windows 8, and the big differences between it and Win 7 (possibly complicated by using a tablet for my introduction to Win 8?) At any rate, i have discovered that when I "turned off" my tablet it was not actually shutting down and thus never really rebooted, and so was getting no updates.  I knew lack of updates was the problem but didn't know why or how to fix it, as every time I tried to manually initiate the updates they would not load, I just got the spinning icon.  Eventually it got so behind on updates the tablet would barely run.  Fortunately I stumbled across the "Restart and Update" command, which finally caused a full reboot and loading of all of the backed up updates. It took two rounds of "restart and update" to get everything running again but seems ok now.  At any rate, a potential hazard of just picking up a Win 8 tablet and making assumptions about how it works based on years of using other MS platforms!

Why can't you sign in/log in to Microsoft?

Well I wish I knew the answer to that question. When I enter my ID and password the little icon just spins and nothing ever happens.

I don't know if this will help (or could hurt):  possibly re-set your password with Microsoft online.
