SD Card door won't open on my Venue 11 Pro

I am enjoying the "big feature" aspects of using my Venue 11 Pro 7139 i5 / 8g / 256g as my main business computer ... portability, battery life, peppy performance, desktop dock, deck-of-card power "bricklet" (that also charges my phone), full Windows, etc.

It's the growing list of little things that sour my experience and make me wonder if Dell is really serious about meeting the needs of business.

In this post, I want to see if there is a way to get my SD card door open.  I bent a paperclip into a "t" and insert it in the SD card hole. At about 4mm I can feel the switch.  I press another 3mm against the spring pressure until the switch seems to bottom out.  I don't hear any click and I don't see any movement.

I removed the tablet's back and battery but don't see any way to help the door open.

What should I do?

I finally got the warranty transfer cleared up and had time to call support.  After a 51 minute odyssey (10:41a to 11:34h) on the phone of ...

  • spelling email addresses using the NATO phonetic alphabet,
  • very detailed process descriptions,
  • waiting on hold for consults,
  • attempting a second paperclip (sometimes paper clips are damaged in the process),
  • confirming my address twice,
  • and a nice little chat with Ravi the manager,

Dell is sending a technician to look at it.  (Whew!)

I will log this as "answered" because I have great confidence that the technician can get the silly little door opened.

That should do it.   Perhaps there is an alignment problem with the release internally.   You might try bending the paperclip a bit or using a guitar pick to try to manually pull the door out - doing so shouldn't damage it provided you are gentle.   Once open, reinsert and test with a paperclip again.   If it still doesn't work, support should be able to help you out.

Yes its a bit tricky the first time, insert the clip until you feel the switch I also pressed my finger on the cover to try and push it in a bit at the same time and it sprung open

Thanks for the reply, notoogeeky.  I wished it would have worked.

I held the tablet in my lap with the door racing up.  I pushed the paper clip until the internal spring was fully compressed (~7mm).  While I held it in this position, I pressed and released the "SD" label a number of times with both my finger and fingernail.  It still refuses to open.

Hey Dell support ... do you want to weigh in here?  I've had my cup of Dell-the-business-machine Kool-Aid.  Can I get a little help from you instead of having to bother great and helpful people like notoogeeky?

Thanks for the reply, Brian.  I don't have anything made of plastic that is thinner than a credit card.  The gap between the case and the door is too tight for something this thick.

I tried pushing the button as described above while catching the side of the door with a pin and then a knife edge.  No luck.  I didn't put much force on the pin and knife because I didn't want to scratch or nick anything.

If you are saying I can insert a bent paperclip into the button hole and pull the door open, I'm willing to try that provided I won't void any warranty if things go badly.  I'm afraid that pulling the door could break the catch that the button releases.  The hole is so small, I can't push the button while pulling the door.

Do you have the authority to say, in effect, "Do it.  If it breaks, Dell will not void the warranty."?

Sorry for the delayed reply.   Please give it a shot.   If you break something PM me and I'll get you taken care of.  My guess is that it is just "stuck" and once you get it open once you'll be OK.
