DV8 charge drains with no use

I've noticed that my fully-charged DV8 works fine but I shut it down (side button, not top) with 75% left and the next morning it won't even turn on. Battery depleted I charge it. That night, same scenario. Why is my battery running down when off?

Are you using the button next to the volume buttons to shut the tablet down?

Also, note that a quick tap of the on-off button puts the tablet into a Sleep mode called "Connected Standby," which will drain a small amount of power but allows for near-instantaneous startup.  If you fully want to shut the tablet down, a long press of the on-off button will do this, as well as swiping in from the right and choosing Settings, Power, Shut down.

Yep, the button you're using is the Sleep/on-off button.

The only thing I can think is, when your DV8P is in its Sleep mode, it actually is doing things while it is sleeping.  Some downloads may still occur, Skype will work, and tablet maintenance can take place.  And so, especially with a new tablet where lots of initial things may be happening, the tablet indeed could run all night long, even though still "sleeping."  Also, some software or apps on your tablet could be keeping the tablet working.

You might want to check that out some.  But I've rarely heard of this happening to such a degree that the tablet shuts off for lack of any remaining battery power.  Another possibility is, keep the tablet plugged in for the next few nights and when not in use.  That will make sure that it has the power to do what it is doing and then, if these are initial new tablet matters, once they are competed, things will stabilize and you can keep the tablet unplugged.

Perhaps others will have some better ideas.

I use the side button above volume, not the one on the top in portrait mode.  I thought that was the sleep mode :(

Haven't explored the Settings buttons yet.  Now is the time I guess.  I have to check other things on it and plug in various cords to test.

Thank you :)

I just held power down for two minutes.  I held power/volume + for ten seconds. I held power for ten seconds, released then two seconds.

Nada

I plug it in, wiggle the cord, the white light comes on above the power button, then goes out

I don't use my DVP8 regularly, and like you had issues with my battery running down.

Up until a few days ago I would always put my tablet into instant sleep mode.
I learned that this is what was causing my tablet to drain itself after a few days.

Now I put my tablet into Hibernate mode if I won't be using it in the next few hours.

Big difference! If I turn my tablet on after a day or two there is hardly any battery drain! :)

Am curious:  how did you get the hibernate option back?  That might be helpful for others as, as shipped, the DV8P doesn't include it.

Sure, I'll be glad to give you my setup.

My desktop has four icons available to close/restart the tablet.

1. Sleep
2. Hibernate
3. Re-start
4. Shutdown

The Sleep icon is part of a trio of AutoHotkey scripts that put the tablet to sleep, turn on/off airplane mode, turn on/off wifi.

The other three icons make use of built-in Windows commands to either turn off or re-start the tablet.

The Hibernate icon is linked to the following command:

c:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState sleep

That is not a typo at the end. It does say 'sleep'.
Strangely, it puts the tablet into hibernation mode.

I like hibernation mode because, even though start-up from Shutdown is relatively fast, start-up from hibernation is a little faster.

It also seems to preserve the battery charge just as well as when using a full shutdown.

I spent a lot of time finding out a way to get a Sleep icon on my desktop that would function the same way as pressing the sleep button on the side of the tablet.
Although I finally got it to work and it works really nicely, I discovered recently that putting the tablet into sleep mode, drains the battery overnight at a far greater rate than does hibernation mode or shutdown.

So now, when I take a break from the tablet for more than a few hours, I will put it into hibernation mode.
It has become my most used method of turning off the tablet.

Thanks--just was curious as to where the Hibernate came from.  And yep, Hibernate should avoid the overnight discharge to virtually nil.

I'm going to test the modes now. Also put hibernate mode notes in email so I can refer from DV8P. Tomorrow I'll post my findings. I just have to remember to use side button next to Volume and not the top button. Top drains battery and now that it has a new motherboard, I want to keep it in good shape and not battery-dead 24/7.

Yep:  the top button, when the tablet is in portrait mode, does not shut the tablet off or put it to sleep--it just switches to the most recently viewed app or screen.  And so the tablet continues to run and use the battery, like normal.
