Dell Venue 8 won't boot after failed update

I had booted up my new Dell Venue 8 (with Android 4.2) for the first time, and it was working pretty well. I was about to install some apps when I noticed "System update, touch to install". I did just that and it downloaded, rebooted, and started installing, with nothing seeming to be wrong. I patiently waited for it to install, and right at the end of the installation it stopped and displayed an error message- which amounted to an Android bot in a 'broken, shut down, stwaming' pose and the message "Error."

And it was frozen.

I held down the power button to turn it off and then turned it back on to see the dell logo for a split second, then a USB symbol for a split second, then it shuts off. This now happens every time I boot.

I tried using Droidboot to reset the installation. I can get that to work, but after I select Recovery it reboots, and after the Dell logo, gives me the "pic of the dead android" error message with the message "No command." This is another freeze screen, as I can't get further without rebooting.

All I want is for this thing to boot, I don't care what version of Android it runs at this point. Any assistance in getting the thing to boot would be greatly appreciated. I won tthis thing in a contest, I don't want to be the proud recipient of a brick.

In this, it turns out you DO NOT have to lose everything! I found this out by risking it and it worked! I didn't lose any single thing on my tablet.

Step 1:Power off device.

Step 2: Hold down Power+Vol-up to access Droidboot.

Step 3: Choose Reboot or Recovery (I chose recovery! I'd say recovery is best option!)

Step 4: When greeted by Dead Android, Hold Power+ press vol-up twice and a mini menu will appear.

Step 5: Select Reboot now. Within a few minutes, Your device should be restored and booted up ready to go! Enjoy your worry-free tablet!

Hi Team,

Recently i have purchased Dell venue 7 tablet. It is working fine. But there is a problem with external memory card slot, it is not able to detect the external memory card. I have tried many cards, all are working fine in other devices, but it is not getting detected by my tablet. I have tried formatting my tablet as well as SD card, but still no use :(. Please provide me some solution.

Regards,

Chaitanya

Judem,  Great job getting your tablet fixed and helping everyone. = )  That's pretty cool.

Unfortunately, none of this helped in my case.  My tablet is a brick.  = (   The only sunny side is that I was stupid enough to buy a warranty for it and I can send it back for a new or repaired one.

Somebody should file a class action suit against Dell for even putting this piece of garbage on the market.  If I made these, I would be embarrassed to put my name on them.  I've been a Dell customer for years and this is inexcusable.  It would be nice if someone from Dell saw these comments but I highly doubt they ever look at these forums.

Don't EVER buy a Dell Venue!!!

Same thing happened to my Venue 7, with the latest update. The update downloaded and seemed to install fine, then the system rebooted, and the screen remained lit but blank. I set it down and forgot about it for a couple of hours. Came back to it and saw it was in the same state and was quite hot—hotter than it has ever gotten, even while gaming.

Did the same as you, Lunamann, with exactly the same results ("no command" when I attempted to use Droidboot to restore the device). I still get the prompt for my password when I turn it on (the device is encrypted), but all I get is the Dell logo for hours on end, after entering the correct password.

Replying to myself with how I fixed this on my Dell Venue 7 (under a different name, because I managed to lock myself out). Just in case it helps someone with a similar problem. Note that this will erase EVERYTHING EVER.

Power off device.

Press and hold Volume Down then press and hold Power (still holding Volume Down) until it starts to boot.

Select Recovery.

Get the red triangle / dead Android guy.

Press and hold Power then tap Volume Up once.

Wipe cache partition (wait till it says completed).

Wipe data / factory reset (wait till it says completed).

Reboot.

Now, it might be redundant wiping the cache first, but the first time I tried "Wipe data / factory reset", it sat there for 15 minutes, which I think is far too long. So, it had frozen I figure. Wiping the cache then wiping everything seemed to work great (each only took a minute or two).

Also, I would have thought I'd have to re-download and apply the update again, but everything seemed in order—kernel from April 29, 2014 and Android Version 4.4.2 (KitKat).

I just had this happen to my Dell Venue 7 after a system update. I popped out my microsd card, rebooted the device and it's hanging on the Dell logo screen no matter how many times I've tried to do a recovery startup.

Dell, please respond.  I had the same thing happen with my Dell Venue 8 running 4.2.  The update was about a 308MB file and it appeared to be re-booting fine, asked for my encryption password, briefly displayed the green droid logo as usual but then returned to the Dell power-up logo.  The unit became very hot after a few hours stuck at the logo.  I was also unable to get past "no command" on droidboot and now it is displaying the "USB" icon and shutting back down - this after 4 hours on the phone with tech support.  No resolution.

Thanks Judem!  This worked.  I should have checked here first instead of spending hours on the phone with tech support (one person kept asking me to run through Windows functions... and I had to beg her to believe that I did not have the Venue 8 Pro).

One correction to my other post: I was already running on 4.3 update when I got the new update notice.  Funny thing though, I expected the "Factory Reset" to take me back to 4.2.2 but it booted up to 4.4.2.  Perhaps 4.4.2 was the update file I installed and it overwrote the original software file?  I would rather boot to true factory settings so that a future update does not brick it with a bad update upload.

Also, though the "recovery" option did not work and the Dell tech rep told me I did not have a recovery file, it is now automatically installing all of my prior apps...

Dell:  Please get this issue on the files.  I called Dell Service just to be transferred to Dell Mobility, to again be transferred to Mobility Hardware support, then told that I needed to speak to small business tech support and they could not simply walk me through the factory reset because I was talking to the wrong department (despite the fact that I did not call that department and they transferred me based on my service tag), then told that the hardware was fine (which I told them hours earlier) and that they would need to transfer me to Dell Mobility software support.  I got disconnected with no resolution.

Judem you rock! I just spent the last twenty minutes trying to set up a profile on this site (apparently you can ignore that whole password not matching warning) just so I could thank you. I had the exact issue you described and I looked everywhere for help but to no avail. Your instructions were spot on and easy to follow. It worked exactly as you said and now my tablet is working again. Thank you so much. You ought to be working at Dell. They need bright people like yourself!

Glad my post was useful to some of you. I have to admit that Google deserves some of the credit :emotion-4:. The second trick (power + tap volume up) did take an awfully long time to discover, though. It would have been nice to be able to read about these shortcuts in the manual, but I suppose Dell and other companies have their reasons for keeping them at least a bit "secret".
