Dell Venue 8 Pro can't update to Win 10 Anniversary Update

I have a Dell Venue 8 Pro with a little over 20 GB on C:\. Upgraded from Win 8.1 to 10 successfully but painfully (had to delete all added software), had problems with the c:\ storage space- lack of sufficient storage. I have a 30 GB SD card for drive d:\, but the Windows Update always needs more space on c:\ than I can give it. Any suggestions? I have tried Windows forums and their suggestions to no avail.

20 GB free or used; I assume used. You didn't mention if you are using automatic update or the Media Creation Tool to perform the Anniversary Update. The automatic update will download the files to the c: drive taking up space and the Anniversary Update will create Windows.old taking up additional space. I am not sure but with the Media Creation Tool you may be able to put the recovery folder on d: drive.

Make sure the upgrade directories (Windows.old, $WINDOWS.~BT, and any temp folders the upgrade created) for Windows 8.1 to 10 are deleted. I did the Anniversary Update (thru automatic update) with about 7-8 GB free space. When the update finished, I have about 1.3 GB free. You may have to take ownership of the folders in order to delete them. I used Add_Take_Ownership_to_context_menu.reg. Google it. Remove_Take_Ownership_from_context_menu.reg can be used to remove Take Ownership from the context menu.

You can always remove all the old update files and etc. Go to This Computer and right-click Windows System drive and select Properties. Pick Disk Cleanup. Windows will show you what can be cleaned. Take your pick. Good luck!

P.S. Your user folder C:\users\login_name can be added  to the SD card storage space as the default instead. In addition, you can use an external flash drive with the Anniversary update in it with an OTG adapter.

Disk Cleanup does not remove everything. The Windows 8.1 to 10 upgrade created a temp folder that Disk Cleanup would not delete. Also, there are files in Windows.old the Disk Cleanup would not delete.    Google "cannot delete windows.old". Windows.old and some temp folders created by the upgrade are owned by ThrustedInstaller and cannot be deleted by Administrator.

If you need to delete the windows.old, directory, try the free ccleaner and good luck!
