Windows 8 & 8.1 should have Windows Defender already installed. You could also try FREE Avast Home Edition and see if that helps.

Thanks, too simple!  I was trying to complicate things.

For whatever's it's worth, Windows Defender has been just fine for me, in general use (although I wish that Microsoft would enhance it, to allow more user control and provide more user information).  And the benefit:  no additional space overhead.
