AndroidPolice Reaching out to Dell about Venue 8 7840 Lollipop Rollout Failure.
I'm the guy who sent the information to every tech blog I could think of regarding the way Dell has handled the Venue 8 7840 lollipop rollout.
I just heard back from AndroidPolice and they are reaching out to their Dell contact. I will post any information I receive once I hear back from them.

The AndroidPolice article isn't about forcing Dell to release the 7840 lollipop update in a buggy, unfinished state. It's about the importance of being honest with customers and transparent. A news story isn't going to make Dell push a buggy update, but maybe it will light a fire under their behinds and redouble their efforts to get it out sooner rather than later. Also, maybe they will no longer make promises they can't keep. Transparency is good. That's all the customer wants. Straight answers, not radio silence after 4 broken promises.

Great, the more this comes out hopefully the better. Hopefully a tech blog can get some better answers than we could!

Ok, I finally heard back from AndroidPolice. This is what he said:
"I got a response, but they asked not to share it. Basically, it'll be ready soon, but not just yet. They know people are waiting for it."
I asked him if, in his opinion, we were talking days or weeks and this was his reply:
"I can't say, unfortunately. They don't even know."
So there is definitely something up with the update. And it's obviously something that Dell is concerned with not sharing with the general public. Your guess is as good as mine. Not good news though.

I replied in the other thread but just want to add. I'm sure the something Dell is concerned with not sharing with the general public is that they are 150% incapable of getting this update out!

Yep, very embarrassing, they spent 4 months trying to build from a source that doesn't exist anymore. So yeah dell would rather not tell their customers.

It has to be something very embarrassing or harmful to their reputation in the android community if they are not willing to be the slightest bit transparent

Their reputation is already ruined. It was prior to this tablet being launched. We just foolishly gave them the benefit of the doubt which they didn't deserve. And the source does exist so that's certainly not the issue as this vampire poster likes to think. While I hope when they FINALLY release the Lollipop OTA it'll be 5.1.1 but I'm not holding my breath.

Anyway you can get AP to run with this story? It's been two weeks since the last promised OTA and we still have no definitive answers. I was just told this on FB:
"Hi Dan,
The Android Lollipop update for the Dell 8 7840 tablet is not released today. Currently there are no ETA, it can be released in two weeks from tomorrow.
-Mohammed Sadiq"
I mean, how absurd. Which one is it? No ETA or the ETA is two weeks from tomorrow?

Should also tell AP their website incorrectly and falsely states this tablet comes with Android 5.0.

THIS IS WONDERFUL NEWS!!! I messaged them earlier about it (because you had messaged them even earlier lol) but I didn't think they'd also call them out. This is great! At least in the Android community their deceit will be known. Small consolation but a good one none the less. :)

I'm not sure this adverse publicity is helpful to us as owners of the tablet. Sure, it will hurt tablet sales, but the fewer tablets Dell sells the less incentive the company has to support the tablet. I've always had good customer service from Dell and the company's lack of communication on this issue is anything but good customer service. However, despite the poor judgment to avoid keeping customers informed, Dell must have a good reason for not releasing the update, and I'd rather have my tablet running Android 4.4 than having it bricked by a faulty update.

I get wanting a good update. Lollipop will mean nothing if it bricks our devices. But, I think the biggest problem is, if they do have a good reason for the delay - they aren't sharing it. And that's an issue. They need to tell us what the issue is that has prevent them in FIVE months time from releasing this update to us.
Don't forget - Dell originally promised to ship this tablet with Lollipop already on board back in January when it first came out. It then obviously shipped with Kit Kat so they said February it'll be updated. February came and it became March. March came and then it became April. Well April is now gone too.
Frankly, this aggravates me more than the fact it isn't released yet. They never should've made promises, and so many promises at that, that they couldn't keep. And now they're getting called out on it - at least on a popular Android tech site. It may not mean much in the long run, but at the very least their empty promises and lack of support for this product will be well known in the Android community.
Furthermore, they released a 10" model with the same chipset. So if that tablet is "good enough" for Lollipop, why can't the 8" get it too?
