iDRAC6 communication failure Problem

Hello,

I am receiving this error when the system boots: "iDRAC6 communication failure."

I have already tried the suggested solution of draining the flea power, but the issue persists.

My question is: could this problem be due to the iDRAC6 and the server being on two different VLANs where the firewall prevents communication between them?

I don’t believe the iDRAC communicates with the server over the LAN network, but it’s still possible.

Hello,

This "iDRAC6 communication failure" is a failure between system board and iDRAC.

Performing the following steps should resolve the issue:

Drain Flea Power (shut down, unplug power cables and hold power button for 20 seconds)

Reconnect power

Boot to the System BIOS (F2) and perform a soft-reset

Turn on Caps/Scroll/NUM Lock

Press ALT+E (clears the NVRAM)

Press ALT+F (resets to factory defaults)

Press ALT+B (saves and reboots)

Boot into the CTRL+E iDRAC BIOS

Reset Default Settings

Press ESC, Save Changes, and reboot

Boot into the CTRL+E iDRAC BIOS again

Verify LAN parameters and IPMI over LAN are ENABLED

Press ESC, Save Changes, and reboot

The iDRAC6 is a daughter card. Try reseating it and if it doesn't help, remove it to see if you can boot normally.

Hi,

The "iDRAC6 communication failure" error typically indicates an issue with the management interface of the server, preventing the Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller (iDRAC) from communicating properly with the server or your management tools. Below are some considerations regarding your issue:

VLAN and Communication
iDRAC and Server Communication: The iDRAC typically communicates with the server over a dedicated management port, not the main LAN interface. However, if the iDRAC is configured to use a specific VLAN for its management network and firewall rules prevent access, it can lead to communication failures.

Firewall Rules: If the iDRAC and the server are on different VLANs and there is a firewall, you may need to ensure that the ports for iDRAC communication are open. The default port for iDRAC web access, for example, is 443 (HTTPS).

Troubleshooting Steps
Check Network Configuration: Verify the network configurations for both the iDRAC and the server. Make sure that the iDRAC's IP address, subnet mask, and VLAN settings are correct and consistent with your network design.

Test Access: From a machine in the same VLAN as the iDRAC, try pinging the iDRAC's IP address and accessing it through a web browser (e.g., https://<iDRAC_IP>). If this fails, there is likely a network-related issue.

Firmware Update: Ensure that the firmware on the iDRAC is up to date. Sometimes, bugs in older firmware versions can lead to communication failures.

Reset iDRAC: If draining flea power didn't resolve the issue, consider using the physical button on the server to reset the iDRAC, or perform a reset via the BIOS or system configuration utility.

Check Logs: If you can access the server’s BIOS or other management interfaces, check for any logs that might indicate issues with the iDRAC.

Direct Connection: If possible, connect a laptop directly to the iDRAC port and configure it to be on the same subnet to rule out VLAN/firewall issues.

If these steps do not resolve your issue, it may be worth contacting Dell support hotline for further assistance, as there could be a hardware issue with the iDRAC itself.

About the "Direct Connection: If possible, connect a laptop directly to the iDRAC port and configure it to be on the same subnet to rule out VLAN/firewall issues.".

What if I'm not sure about which IP address the IDRAC has?

You can use LCD panel it might display iDRAC ip address.

Or check DHCP server client list to identify the idrac IP Adress.

You have OpenManage installed it can help you discover and manage the iDRAC IP adress

No LCD present. I'm not sure how to follow the steps you mentioned, as the iDRAC is not communicating. Any help?
