How to connect OEM PCIe card to iDRAC, BMC, or motherboard through PCIe SMBus
I have a plan to manage OEM PCIe cards through PCIe SMBus in PowerEdge R740.
OEM PCIe card has its own SMBus commands and SMBus function.
They have been verified by directly attaching the external SMBus master module to OEM PCIe card's PCIe SMBus pins.
Then, how can I have access to OEM PCIe card in PowerEdge R740?
1) Is it possible to simply communicate with it through "SMBus I801 adapter" I2C?
2) Should I2C driver for OEM PCIe card's SMBus be prepared?
3) Is it enough for only iDRAC or BMC's firmware to be customized in order to recognize OEM PCIe card?
Thanks,

Hi @pagansjb,
As much as I would like to provide information about your questions, OEM PCIe cards and PCIe SMBus is not verified or tested by Dell engineering. Hence, we do not have any documentation stating it would work. I remember I did respond to a similar post some time ago, the user ended did not manage to figure out what is the root cause. Hence, that answers your question 1 and 2. Question 3, yes, iDRAC, BMC and BIOS controls the server to recognize all hardware modules. But, they are not customizable. You may need to log a call to sales engineering to inquire OEM build PowerEdge.
