fwupd user in Dell R450 server and Fan overspeeding

hello here, i am using this Dell R450 server, i have enabled automatic updates in its IDRAC

but since then there is a local user in IDRAC named fwupd which is disabled and inactive, and when i delete it i will always find it there.

Does anyone came accross this local user in IDRAC? is it a virus?

At the same time the server works fine but fans can spin up to 100% in 20 seconds then drop to 35% and stay like that for 10 to 15 minutes then spins up again. server temperature is between 26 degree centigrade to 35 degree centigrade.

Any advice or suggestion is highly appreciated!

Kind Regards,

Hello,

https://www.dell.com/community/en/conversations/poweredge-hddscsiraid/problem-using-idrac-7201005/67a9bbb32ade4f506743ae86?page=3
I wrote it here also, but if the issue happens to be with iDRAC version, version 7.20.30.50 is planned for June 2025, FYI.

Hello,

which is the OS installed on the server?

fwupd is a user created by the OS

How to update device firmware using fwupd on RHEL system? - Red Hat Customer Portal

The FAN behaviour can be normal, I suggest you to keep iDRAC and BIOS up to date.

Thanks

@DELL-Marco B  Hi!

Thank you for taking your time to reply -:)

The Server is running Ubuntu 20.04, if the fwupd user is a linux daemon for sure? then will be good. Otherwise is a malware with a good name as such, i still do not know.

The fan spinning reaches 100% of speed which is too much noise also, i still believe this speed and noise is not normal, because it raises up even if the temperature is below 30 degree centigrade.

I wrote to Dell also and the tech advised to downgrade the IDRAC firmware version to 6.10.80.00

Thank you again for your suggestions, please keep it up that heart!

I experienced the same issue for my R450's running Windows 2022, following the application of the iDRAC update from the 2025 Q2 Server Update Utility.
My current band-aid is to avoiding restarting the servers.  Instead, power down the server, then power it up.  Following this process the system fans do not act up.

Last week the connecting Cisco switches received a firmware update, during the reboot of the switches at the end of the firmware installation the fans same servers started began surging again.  These servers do not currently have the iDRAC's connected.  This means it had to be the change or loss of signal to the network connections affected the server fan speed; losing control again.  Once more powering down each of the servers, then starting them up again, resolved the issue for now.
Because this switch firmware upgrade did not touch the iDRAC port, I do not know how the iDRAC could be involved directly with this issue.

Hello, what is the server model or iDRAC version, can you tell us? For fans spinning up it is best that you check your logs.  You can send your logs to https://www.dell.com/support/incidents-online/en-au/contactus/dynamic?lwp=rt with your service tag.
