The original issue is"I bought a DELL EMC INTEL SSD D-7-5520 /SSDPF2KX019T1E"

And you got "My Intel drives are not Dell OEM", so this is expected. 3rd party components cannot be managed by iDRAC, so it will rump up fans.

Hello, thanks for choosing Dell and welcome to our community.
Your disk is
Part #:0HVC7
Part Desc.:SSDR,1.92TB,NVRII,U.2,P5520
and the part you later added on is
Part #:FF7PK
Part Desc.:ASSY,CBL,NVME2-5,X10BP,MB,R640

May I ask why you added the part later?

I'm just wondering if it's possible your sever was originally purchased for SAS interface, not for NVME. You may see other errors, also.
Respectfully,

Hello, I purchased the NVME cable FF7PK. There are no errors in idrac.
Could the problem be that I left the PERC H740P Mini (Embedded) Integrated RAID Controller 1?

IDRAC offers a 40% fan speed offset... hmm original parts and still there is a problem... :((( IPMITOOL does not work for fan offset... the components are cold and the fan runs at 65%. I don't understand where the problem is. IDRAC do not no errors.

Hi,

The issue with your Dell EMC POWEREDGE R640 server and the Intel SSD D-7-5520 NVMe drive is likely related to the fan speed and the RAID controller settings. Here are some potential causes and solutions:

1. RAID Controller Settings:

PERC H740P Mini: Ensure that the RAID controller is configured correctly for the NVMe drive. Check the RAID level, drive assignment, and any specific settings for NVMe drives in the PERC BIOS.
Drive Group: If the NVMe drive is part of a drive group, verify that the group's settings are appropriate. Incorrect settings can affect performance and fan speed.
Cache Settings: Adjust the RAID controller's cache settings if necessary. Excessive caching can sometimes lead to higher fan speeds.
2. NVMe Drive Compatibility:

Firmware: Ensure that the NVMe drive's firmware is up-to-date. Outdated firmware can cause compatibility issues and affect performance.
Driver: Verify that the correct NVMe driver is installed on the server. Incorrect drivers can lead to performance problems and fan speed issues.
3. Server BIOS Settings:

Fan Control: Check the server's BIOS settings for any options related to fan control. If the BIOS allows for manual fan speed adjustment, try setting it to a lower value.
Power Management: Ensure that the server's power management settings are appropriate. Aggressive power-saving modes can sometimes affect fan speed.
4. Thermal Sensors:

Calibration: Verify that the server's thermal sensors are calibrated correctly. Incorrect sensor readings can lead to excessive fan speeds.
Dust: Check for dust buildup in the server's internal components, as this can affect cooling efficiency and fan speed.
Troubleshooting Steps:

Update Firmware and Drivers: Update the NVMe drive's firmware and ensure that the correct driver is installed on the server.
Check RAID Controller Settings: Review the PERC H740P Mini's configuration for the NVMe drive, including RAID level, drive group settings, and cache settings.
Adjust BIOS Settings: Check the server's BIOS for fan control and power management options.
Monitor Thermal Sensors: Verify that the thermal sensors are calibrated correctly and that there is no excessive dust buildup in the server.
Test with Different NVMe Drive: If possible, try using a different NVMe drive to isolate the issue.

Hello,

Have You managed to resolve this problem? How?
I have the same problem but however, my nvme drives are not OEM. They are Intel DC series.

If I remove NVME drives, fans go normal.

Any way to resolve this?

Hello,

did you check firmware of iDRAC and BIOS?

Unfortunately i don't see other solution about this issue.

@DELL-Marco B

I have just updated the BIOS to 2.23.0. The problem remain the same...

I wasn't able to upgrade the nvme firmware even if it is available for download on dell website. The drives are u.2 Intel DC  P4500 2TB. Firmware update tool says that my system isn't compatible. Currently, windows server 2022 standard is the OS.

iDRAC shows warning even if there is nothing to be warned about. At least not when I click on it.

Here is the screenshot.

Probably the warning is related to the firmware not updated.

Did you check also RAID controller driver/firmware?

@DELL-Marco B

It has a HBA330 card. This part seems to be good. The problem with fans appears only when u.2 drives are inserted.

Warning was there even before I tried to upgrade nvme drives firmware. When I click on Miscellaneous under the warning, I can see nothing bad. I cleared the log and only one thing can be seen there and that is about log clearing.
