What is the difference between changing director flag settings using bin file and changing director flag settings using SYMCLI?
Hi,
Please provide help on the above mentioned query.
1.) Is there any difference between changing director flag settings using bin file and changing director flag settings using SYMCLI (including both the methods of changing flag at initiator level and changing flag globally on the FA port)?
2.) Which is the best recommended option for changing director flag settings, is it using bin file or SYMCLI?
3.) Is there any difference in the method of changing director flag settings in DMX-3/4 and changing director flag settings in V-Max?

customers use symcli to make changes to the bin file, EMC guys can use Symmwin to make change to the bin file. More and more tasks that use to be "bin file only" becoming available to customers via symcli. For example changing an adapter from FA to RA used to be a Symmwin only operation, now with the latest symcli/VMAX customers can do it themselves.

Hi Dynamox,
Thank you for the reply.
The difference between changing director flag setting ay the initiator level in DMX and V-Max has been provided by you.
Also, you explained the difference between changing director flag settings at the FA port level and initiator level, really well.
Both these operations of changing director flag settings are performed using SYMCLI, so for ease of reference, let's call them the SYMCLI method.
The director flag settings can also be changed using bin file.
I need to know the difference between changing director flag settings using SYMCLI and changing director flag settings using bin file.
The queries in points 2.) and 3.) follow

if you change it at the FA level, it applies to all systems zoned to that FA, changing it at the initiator level only applies to that specific system. Very important when you mix different operating systems/applications that require different flags.
I set "common" flags at the FA level, flags that are needed for all of my operating systems. Then OS specific flags get set at the initiator level.
Command is slightly different, symaccess versus symmask
symaccess -sid 123 -type init -name ig_oracle set ig_flag on D -enable
symmask -sid 123 set hba_flags on D -enable -wwn XXXXXXXXXXXXXX -dir YY -p Z

Thank you for the reply.
1.) I understand that the final outcome of the director flag change process, whether using bin file or SYMCLI, is the same, but, is there any difference in the back - end on how the director flag change gets applied when doing it using bin file and when doing it using SYMCLI.
2.) For an operation like this (i.e. director flag change), which used to be performed by bin file change but now is possible using SYMCLI, is using the SYMCLI method the best recommended option, as it would not require any downtime and would possibly be executed faster?
3.) Also, when director flag changes using bin file, is it done at the FA port level?
4.) Is there any document in support.emc.com, which lists the operations which could only be executed using bin file change, are now possible to be executed using SYMCLI?
5.) It will be really helpful, if you could point to a document or its link, which provides the list of operations in V-Max which are performed using SYMCLI, but the same operations in DMX can only be performed using bin file change?

look at the latest solutions enabler documentation, if operation you are interested is not there then it can only be done using Symmwin. Regardless what method you use, to change FA flags you have to take that FA port offline first. I am a customer and don't have access to Symmwin but changing FA flags in the cli is supper fast, a couple minutes max.

Thank you for the reply, Dynamox.
I will check the latest Solutions Enabler guide.
When director flag is changed using bin file, do you know whether the flag change is at the FA port level or not
