Symm 8730 CKD ->FBA

Hi,

You should be able to convert the existing emulation of CKD devices to FBA devices by Bin change.

The code level you are running si going to be your challenge.  To "convert" to FBA you have to delete the mainframe volumes and then create FBA volumes of what ever hyper size you want.  I am not sure that you can delete volumes at 5568 code and have gaps in the symmvolumne listing.  I havent worked with that level of code for a long time.  Bear in mind that you cannot have mainframe directors with no volumes mapped to them.  I did this same exercise on a DMX1000 (higher code level) so I created a very short CU and left that on the ficon directors so they wont go into "DD" (IMPL monitor) and stop all config changes, if it lets you take the last device away.

thanks for your information. I forgot to mention that I tried the following, deleted the volumes - based on the info you provided I will keep one CKD for the FICON diretors to avoid problems - then tried to create new volumes. Symmwin does not offer me the option to use the disk group 0. The physical drives were empty in group 0.

based on my exprience this was possible only using PC Group account. Tried it on my PC in Symmwin.

How lond does this conversion take on a real system? It does realy some conversion on the hypers or just switch a few bites, and magically they are FBA hypers?

thank you for all your replies. I have a very good news, it works. The solution that I did not selected the Phys Group option, but left it empty. Now I successfully created FBA hypers 18590cyls each, on the empty disks.

Ok, thank you, but I know how to setup new devices. The problem is the folowing, after I delete the CKD volumes, the physical drives are empty (group 0), in DiskMap view.In VolReq I do not have the option selecting group 0, I can select only 1,2,3. Why?

This is going to VTOC your existing FBA volumes means the data on them will be lost.

I am sure of the exact time, it would vary depending on systems.
