Mixing physical and virtual environments on same FA ports - any issues?
Hello!
Is there any known issues regarding mixing physical env' (mostly Oracle rac) and virtual env' (mostly VMware) ?
I've heard a say that there is different I/O patterns and it may cause some issues on the array's FA.

sagi,
Please consider moving this question to the proper forum for maximum visibility. Questions written to the users' own "Discussions" space (All People > sagi > Discussions) don't get the same amount of attention and questions can go unanswered for a long time. You can do so by selecting "Move" under ACTIONS along the right. Then search for and select: "Symmetrix Support Forum" which would be the most relevant for this question.

I am not sure if diff IO pattern can cause issues at FA. However, you should be aware of the total FA CPU utilization while designing your solution. You would not want to over burden your CPU.

Sagi,
"Adding more FA ports from different FA processors will help alleviate high FA queue depth if there is a backlog. From what I experience in the field with my customers is that not enough FA processors allocated to high performance OLTP applications (small block random I/O) leads to longer response times; adding more FA procs lowers response time. Response Time (RT) is a function of Service Time (ST) divided by (1-Utilization): RT = ST / (1-Utilztn). So dropping the average utilization percentage of the current FA processors by adding more FA procs to the port group of the masking view should improve the response time because it lowers the average FA processor queue depth."
Thanks to a solutions architect from EMC for the above input. Further you want to work with the Solutions Architect team at EMC with respect to your contract.
Hope it helps.
