FAST VMAX - storage group configuration
Hello,
If I wanted to have a host that had 2 devices on a VMAX that I wanted to be in different FAST policies, what would be the best way to set that up? The only thing I could think of was to create separate masking views and storage groups:
Storage Groups:
host1_gold_SG - 100gb dev
host1_silver_SG - 300gb dev
Masking Views:
host1_gold_MV (host1_gold_SG)
host1_silver_MV (host1_silver_SG)
We have many hosts that have different IO requirements for individual volumes. Most often a database volume along with backup volume for dumps, etc. They don't need to be in the same policy since they don't have the same performance demands. I'd like to avoid having to pin devices since some of the hosts have dump volumes that might need the full range of a silver policy, etc.
It was also recommend that we could create 3 storage groups which contain all devices that we want in a specific policy. Then we could create single host based storage group with those devices. This would allow the devices to have individual FAST policies applied, yet still be within the same SG.
host1_SG - dev1, dev2 (No FAST policy associated)
GOLD_SG - dev1 (Gold FAST Policy Associated)
SILVER_SG -dev2 (Silver FAST Policy Associated)
However, then our policy %'s are applied to the GOLD_SG, SILVER_SG groups rather than the actual host storage group. This would eliminate the performance balancing of only allowing any one host to have a certain % of disk tier assigned.
How are you assigning luns to a host that need to be in multiple FAST policies? Thanks!!

You can have a single SG containing all your devices that will be part of your masking VIEW. Creat two SGs containing your "GOLD" devices and your "SILVER" devices and add them to the corresponding policy. When adding additional devices in the future, remember to add them to two SGs.

Ya, we decided to go with something similar so we would have only one masking view to worry about
Storage Groups:
host1_SG - dev1, dev2 (No FAST policy associated)
GOLD_SG - dev1 (Gold FAST Policy Associated)
SILVER_SG -dev2 (Silver FAST Policy Associated)
Masking View:
host_MV --> host1_SG
