esxi 5.1 svmotion keeps failing
we have recently bought a vmax20k. we are migrating test vmware servers using storage vmotion. we keep getting path drop errors and the migration times out. the exact error is:
Path redundancy to storage device naa.<> degraded. Path <> is down.
any solutions?

Have a case open with EMC for a week.
Enginuity code is 5876.229.145. Both brocade and vmware report no problems on their end.
The storage vmotion is from an old XIV to the vmax 20K

Have you opened a case with EMC Support?
Have you validated the host and fabric configurations with EMC eLab?
What version of Enginuity Code is running on the VMAX 20K?
The Storage vMotion is from old array to new array right? Not within the same array?

Can you send me your SR#?
What is the host hardware, HBA model, and HBA firmware?
Are you using PowerPath/VE or NMP?
If NMP, is it Round Robin or Fixed?
If Round Robin, did you change the IOPS from default of 1000 to EMC recommended value of 1?

SR#58631720
We are using NMP, round robin. Yes, we changed the IOPS to emc rec of 1.

Is the svmotion happening between two hosts as well as two storage arrays? Ie: HostA on IBM storage, HostB on VMAX, migrating VM from A to B? Or is the same host zoned to both arrays at the same time?
If it’s two hosts, you should check the IP network between the hosts. Packet Loss/Errors could cause all sorts of problems.

I ran into a similar issue with another customer and we had to back-rev the HBA driver for ESX5.1 but that was Emulex Mezz cards, it looks like yours are QLogic so it wouldn’t be the same issue.
I can’t find it now but there’s also a VMware KB about hosts trying to use VAAI-XCOPY during an SVMotion between arrays which is not possible. Can you disable the datamover accelerated move and try the migration again? I’m still looking for that KB in the meantime.
/DataMover/HardwareAcceleratedMove = 0
This can be done online without a reboot of the host and it’s non-disruptive.

Is the same host but between 2 arrays. We are getting this issue only with vmware. There is no issue migrating aix or windows.
Also, both the arrays are at the same site. Connected with fc, in the same fabric.

We have tried with VAAI on and off. Still getting the same errors.

The problem is resolved. There was a cable fault for one of the ports used in the svm.

FC cable. We also had some issues with SFP's on that link.

Good to hear! Was that an FC cable or IP?
