DMX-4 Dial-out

I need to track every time (even if just a nightly test) the DMX-4 calls home. Does anyone know what log this information is kept in on the Service Processor? Other ideas on where I can get this information? Unfortunately I am not seeing it in the common audit log. We are using a modem and only allow outgoing.

ConnectEMC application that runs on the service processor has a log file but unless you are authorized service provider, you will not have access to sp. Time to migrate to ESRS ? Great auditing capabilities.

That is unfortunate. -Thank you

Am I able to setup ConnectEMC on the Service Processor to only allow the modem to dial out?

Yes, you're able to stup ConnectEMC with only modem dialhome enabled on service processor. the dialhome log will be available under O:\EMC\CONNECTEMC\LOGS

EMC is responsible for setting up dial home on the SP. ConnectEMC is the program EMC uses for dial home via modem or other means (IE. ESRS) it does not govern dial in.

To monitor your modem use are you able to log the calls on the telephone line?

Do you have a procedure or primus # on how this is done?

We need to prevent dial in for security and auditing reasons. Sounds like we could have the CE stop EMCRemote or Remotely Anywhere and still dial out via ConnectEMC. -Thank you

how do you plan on handling situations when remote support must dial-in ? You will not have access to sp to re-enable those two apps.

not sure who manages your PBX but you could see if it's possible to disable dial-in at that level. Application responsible for accepting dial-in connections is Remotely Anywhere or EMCRemote. If those are stopped on sp ..nobody can dial-in. The question is why are you trying to prevent dial-in. Security reasons, auditing reasons ?

To check on all dial homes use powerlink.

Go to my support---> Query Service Requests.

Select the site(s) you wish to run the query on.

Status ALL Date Type LAST UPDATE DATE Severity ALL Days Back YOUR CHOICE.

Then click Run Query.

You will get a list of ALL SR's. This will include any dial homes in your time period. It will also include all HW and SW Sr's and any SR's the CE has open against your site (IE Upgrades etc)

So you do not need to get any info from the SP.

With respect to dial in.

I was a CE for a number of secure sites whilst at EMC.

Often we had 2 lines for the symms. Dial in dial out. When the lab got a dial out they checked the site notes where there was a number to call and the local NOC staff would unplug dial home and plug in dial in.

Another way was the loacl NOC had a switch on the PBX which they flicked over to a dial in line. The dial out line was set up from the service provider as a dial out line no incoming calls on both scenarios.

If you are using ESRS then you get EMC to set it up so that again the PSE lab must call the NOC and get a port open on ESRS for 'dial in'

It looks like ESRS is not an option at your site. After dealing with dial in dial out issues over 10 years as a CE I would highly recomend getting ESRS installed This will save so many headaches. I now work at the other ens and we have ESRS and it saves both EMC and the customer uneeded hours of modem issues.

Hope this is helpful.

Install the ESRS Gateway.  It has a rules engines called Policy Manager that will show you all dial out's and dial in's.  You can also set rules for how EMC can connect on an array or group of arrays basis; always allow, permission required, or do not allow.  This is a network based remote support product and uses 128 bit encryption to send data up to EMC over SSL.

BTW if you want to use the query service request function to see dial homes you have to do an advanced query and select include dial homes in a drop down box.  You will only see that box under advanced.

I think the ESRS Gateway would solve the auditing function you seem to need.

If EMCRemote is disabled the modem should not pick up correct (i.e. it should continue to ring)?

Yes if EMCRemote is disabled then the modem will not answer.
