XPS 9720 NVIDIA graphic card not detecting

XPS 17 9720

XPS 17 9720

I have recently updated the bios of XPS 9720 to 1.32.1 after updating NVIDIA grahic card is not working on Windows 11. Below error I am seeing in device manager

To verfiy its a bios issue or hardware issue. I used dell troubleshooting steps for hardware failure tests are passing and test is only checking for Intel graphics card.

I tried to revert BIOS to 1.31.0 but BIOS downgrade is blocked less than 1.32.0.

Any help on this issue is appreciated

Thank you.

Hi

Can you try installing drivers, or try and roll back the drivers?

Hi

Starting in safe mode and loading minimal drivers with ENABLING de-bugging mode, in the hope of getting a better reason why w11 disables your card.

Hi Tejokrishna:

Has your Dell support warranty expired?

How did you update your BIOS? ***

Are you currently using the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050/3060 Graphics Driver v32.0.15.6103 (rel. 17-Dec-2024) and Intel UHD/Iris Xe Graphics Driver v32.0.101.6556 (rel. 09-Apr-2025) recommended on your XPS 17 9720 support page at https://www.dell.com/support/product-details/en-us/product/xps-17-9720-laptop/drivers?

NOTE: Choose the Select Drivers button on that support page, click the "This Device" tab as shown below and enter your unique Service Tag.  This should display a filtered list of Dell software and hardware drivers that match your system components.

Open a Run dialog box (Windows key + R), enter msinfo32 to open your System Information, and look for the field named "BIOS Version / Date" in the summary].  Does this confirm you currently have Dell XPS 17 9720 System BIOS v1.32.1 (rel. 15-May-2025)?

I tried its installing successfully but still issue remains same. Rollback is disabled

When you say you can't roll back are you referring to your to your NVIDIA graphics driver or to your BIOS v1.32.1? (as implied in the "Important Information" section of the release notes <here>; Dell appears to have skipped from v1.31.0 directly to v1.32.1 for the XPS 17 9720 BIOS, which would prevent a rollback).

*** ASIDE: This won't help now, but going forward I would strongly advise that you do NOT allow Windows Update or a Dell utility like SupportAssist v4.x or Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.x to update your BIOS, since any glitch during the update process can result in serious problems, including an unbootable system. See the instructions <here> in the SupportAssist v4.0 User Guide for disabling automatic updates to prevent an unexpected BIOS update - if you run update checks manually from the  Home tab of SupportAssist this will allow you to review the list of available updates and decline any BIOS update before it starts to download.

When Dell releases a critical BIOS update that as been certified for my Inspiron 5584 I normally save the .exe installer recommended on the Drivers & Downloads tab of my Inspiron 5584 support page to my desktop, close all my open programs, and then right-click the .exe file and choose "Run as Administrator".  However, the safer method is to flash your BIOS from a removable USB stick.

Hi Imcari,

Yes, my warranty is exprired.

I used Dell update app to update BIOS to 1.32.1.

I formatted my system to check if it resolves the issue. I used Dell hardware troubleshoot to check for harware failure. It is only showing Intel graphic card. Its not even detecting NVIDIA graphic card because of this I am suspecting its BIOS update issue.

Hardware troubleshoot is passing all test without failure.

HiTejokrishna:

The image in your original post shows your NVIDIA graphics card is detected by Device Manager but is not working correctly due to a Code 43 error. That typically indicates a driver-related issue or potential hardware problem.

Did you check the driver version shown on the Driver tab of your NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 device in Device Manager?  If you are using a "generic" NVIDIA driver (e.g., the driver recommended by NVIDIA at https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/drivers/ or by a utility like the NVIDIA app) rather than the custom NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050/3060 Graphics Driver v32.0.15.6103 (rel. 17-Dec-2024) recommended on your XPS 17 9720 support page at https://www.dell.com/support/product-details/en-us/product/xps-17-9720-laptop/drivers then a rollback to driver v32.0.15.6103 (i.e., Dell's custom graphics driver certified for your Dell BIOS) might solve your problem.

As a first troubleshooting step I'd suggest you perform a clean [Custom (Advanced)] reinstall of your graphics driver using the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050/3060 Graphics Driver v32.0.15.6103 currently recommended on your XPS 17 9720 support page.  See the instructions in the Dell support article Installing NVIDIA Video Drivers with the Clean Installation.

I used Dell update app to update BIOS to 1.32.1

Hi Tejokrishna:

Did you confirm that msinfo32 (System Information) shows you currently have BIOS v1.32.1?  If so I would not be surprised to learn that some glitch occurred during the BIOS update using the Dell Update app and/or that your new BIOS v1.32.1 has a compatibility issue with your custom NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 v32.0.15.6103 driver (rel. 17-Dec-2024).

The Important Information section of release notes <here> for the Dell XPS 17 9720 System BIOS v1.32.1 installer (Precision_5770_XPS_9720_1.32.1.exe, rel. 15-May-2025) seem to confirm that your BIOS cannot be rolled back to the previous v1.31.0 after it is updated to v1.32.1, so one option might be to try an over-the-top install using that standalone v1.32.1 installer with a safer installation method like a BIOS flash from a USB stick. I don't know if this is even possible (or advisable) so I'd suggest you post about this in the XPS Laptop board at https://www.dell.com/community/en/topics/xps, since that board is monitored by Tech Experts and other Dell users with advanced technical skills.  BIOS updates can be tricky at the best of times and I don't want to advise you to do anything that might leave your system in worse shape than it already is. Someone in that XPS Laptop board might even know of a settings tweak in your BIOS that will re-activate your NVIDIA graphics card, although I'm not hopeful for a quick fix given the Code 43 error displayed in your Device Manager.

I tried clean install, it didn't work.

When you post in the XPS Laptop forum I'd also ask if anyone is successfully running a newer "generic" NVIDIA driver offered at https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/drivers/ for a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 (e.g., v576.52 / v32.0.15.7652, rel. 19-May-2025).  In your case a driver upgrade might be necessary if Dell didn't run proper quality assurance tests before releasing your new BIOS v1.32.1.

Hi Tejokrishna:

I don't know, but here are a few troubleshooting tips.

If you used the hardware scan built in to SupportAssist I'd suggest you run a proper F12 ePSA (enhanced Pre-boot System Assessment) Quick Test hardware diagnostic from your BIOS, followed by an Advanced Diagnostic Test of your graphics / video device.  If any of your ePSA scans detects a problem post back and let us know the error code.

The support article How to Run Dell Preboot Diagnostics and Hardware Tests on Your Dell Computer and companion video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inYLxW2_xKo explain how to start your ePSA diagnostics (i.e., restart your computer, repeatedly tap the F12 key as soon as the Dell logo appears, and choose Diagnostics from the boot menu screen).  If this doesn't display your boot menu then restart your computer and try again, quickly tapping the F12 key about 2 times every second.

Your Win 11 OS also has built-in troubleshooters for diagnosing hardware problems at Settings | System | Troubleshoot | Other Troubleshooters (see the Lifewire article Mastering Windows Diagnostics: A Step-by-Step Guide), although I'm not sure if Win 11 offers a separate troubleshooter for graphics / video devices. There is also a built-in tool called the DirectX Diagnostic Tool [open a Run dialog box (Windows key + R) and enter dxdiag - see the Lifewire article How to Find Out What Graphics Card You Have on a Windows 11 Computer], but most of the information displayed will be similar to what you see in Device Manager.

NOTE: Since you have more than one graphics GPU (Intel and NVIDIA) they should be listed as Display 1 and Display 2 in the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.

The NVIDIA App I mentioned <above> might also provide some useful information and might already be installed on your computer if it was bundled with your NVIDIA driver package.

HWiNFO is a good general diagnostic tool that will provide basic information for all your hardware components (e.g., like S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics for your hard drive) but for graphics GPU problems I would recommend TechPowerUp's GPU-Z utility, a portable app that can be run from any location (including a removable USB stick) that includes a few basic GPU status tests on the Advanced tab. Be sure to select your NVIDIA card from the dropdown in the bottom-left corner, and note that some status tests are dependent on the make / model of your GPU (e.g., NVIDIA DLSS). From my Inspiron 5584, which only has an on-board Intel UHD Graphics 620 GPU built in to the motherboard:

-----------
Dell Inspiron 15 5584 * 64-bit Win 10 Pro v22H2 build 19045.5854 * Intel i5-8265U CPU * 8 GB RAM * 256 GB Toshiba KBG40ZNS256G NVMe SSD * Intel UHD Graphics 620 * My Dell v2.2.6.0 * Fusion Service 2.2.14.0 * HWiNFO Portable 8.26.5730 * GPU-Z v2.66.0

Hi Tejokrishna:

Please see Emilyjames' 15-Jun-2025 Dell XPS 9720 Not Recognizing NVIDIA Graphics Card – Any Fixes?.  You might want to follow that topic just in case they find a solution.

I also noticed Dell_XPS_User8888's 11-Jun-2025 URGENT - XPS17-9720 Severe Performance Issue after updating Bios 1.32 in the XPS Laptop board, so feedback from other users is beginning to point to an issue with the recent Dell XPS 17 9720 System BIOS v1.32.1 update (rel. 15-May-2025).

Hopefully @DELL-Chris M or one of the other Community Managers will jump in and advise on the best way to proceed, given that a BIOS downgrade to the previous XPS 17 9720 System BIOS v1.31.0 (rel. 11-Mar-2025) isn't possible according to the v1.32.1 release notes <here>.
