  • We have received many issues reported from the field where customers observe PCI Express bus error (WPE01) when they run SupportAssist Hardware scan OTB or web.
  • This is not a hardware fault. This issue is related to software where the Realtek driver has marked some parameter wrong in the Windows registry not as per industry standard. This should be corrected in the next release of the Realtek Ethernet driver.

Hi Mclai:

What is your Windows operating system and SupportAssist version, and do you have the current Dell XPS 8940 System BIOS v2.4.0 (rel. 10-Jan-2022) recommended <here> on the Drivers & Downloads support page for the the XPS 8940? If you have a Win 10 or Win 11 OS let us know the version and build shown at Settings | System | About | Windows Specifications [or open a Run dialog box (press the Windows + R keys) and enter winver]. To find your current BIOS version open a Run dialog box, enter msinfo32 to open your System Information panel and look for the “BIOS Version/Date” field.

I don't recognize your code WPE01-EXC error code but a Google search indicates it is likely a PC-Doctor Toolbox error code (note that Dell SupportAssist is a re-branded version of PC-Doctor).

Please read cat0w's 23-Dec-2021 thread XPS 8940, SA, PCIe Status Test - WPE01-EFR for further information about these PC-Doctor codes. I don't know if there's a reason why these WPE01-xxx codes seems to be more prevalent on XPS models and/or Win 11 computers, but as far as I know these codes are only supposed to be collected as part of the telemetry data sent to Dell for analysis and don't actually indicate that the hardware device is not working correctly.  At last report Dell was supposed to be fixing SupportAssist so that these PC-Doctor codes are not reported to the end user in the SupportAssist interface.

If you're still worried that you might have a problem with one of your hardware devices then Dell's Diagnostics & Tools page has some additional tests you can run on your computer.  If the ePCR (pre-boot) diagnostics throw an 8-digit error code (e.g., 1000-xxxx or 2000-xxxx) you can enter that error code on the SupportAssist Pre-Boot System Performance Check page to look up further information.

Hi @Mclai

Refer below communication and do not worry about your network card because this getting failed due to some network card driver configuration.

Hi @NikhilKiroula :

I am not able to reach the webpage at https://solutions.onecloud.dell.com/sites/KCC/Comms/4703_Nohardware/EN.html. I get a "Problem loading page: The connection has timed out" error with Firefox v97.0.1 and a similar "Can't reach this page: solutions.onecloud.dell.com took too long to respond (ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT)" with MS Edge v98.0.1108.62.

Do you mean that mclai can safely ignore this WPE01-EXC error message, and that they should still be able to create a wired internet connection via their network card without making any configuration changes?

Is it possible that the "Optimize Network" scan of SupportAssist v3.10.4 could be the cause of this "network card configuration" error, is this configuration problem caused by some type of mismatch between the PCIe bus / expansion slots on the motherboard and the PCIe network card used in the XPS 8940, or is the network card troubleshooter in SupportAssist v3.10.4 outdated and unable to correctly test the status of newer PCIe network cards?

Hi Mclai:

You said <above> that your "network card failed" when you ran a SupportAssist troubleshooter to diagnose your hardware.  Instead of using a wireless connection, have you tested to see if you can successfully create a wired internet connection by connecting your modem / router to the Ethernet port of your network card using an Ethernet cable? (note: I have an old Cat5e Ethernet cable with RJ45 connectors on both ends that I can use to connect the Realtek PCIe FE network card in my Inspiron 5584 to my modem if I'm having problems with my wireless connection)

I'm not sure what make/model of network (LAN) card is installed in your system, but the support page <here> for the XPS 8940 lists a Killer PCIe Ethernet Controller Driver (v3.0.1584, rel. 07-Sep-2021) that is compatible with the Killer Gigabit Ethernet Controllers (series E2x00 and E3x00).
