Update to SupportAssist v3.10.4.18 OK, Forced Update of SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools Fails

I have an Inspiron 5584 running Win 10 Pro v21H1. SupportAssist v3.10.3.3 successfully updated the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools (a.k.a. SupportAssist Remediation) v5.5.0.16041 on 21-Oct-2021. System Repair is disabled in my SupportAssist settings (I use Macrium Reflect Free to create full disk images and a bootable USB thumb drive for emergency recovery) and I have changed the Start Type of my Dell SupportAssist Remediation service from "Automatic (Delayed Start)" to "Disabled" (see my 15-Nov-2021 post on page 9 of DellKaren's "Successful Application Reconfiguration" and SupportAssist about a glitch in Dell SupportAssist Remediation if this service loads at boot-up). All automated updates and optimization scans are turned off in SupportAssist [i.e., Options (gear icon) | Settings | Automate Scans and Optimizations | Scan Your System and Drivers at: | DISABLED].

When I launched SupportAssist (SA) v3.10.3.3 on 20-Nov-2021 a pop-up offered to update the program (I clicked "Yes, update now), but once the self-update to SA v3.10.4.18 finished the user interface displayed a yellow banner warning "You can continue using this application once we've added OS Recovery."

When I clicked the "Show Me" button on that yellow banner the SupportAssist interface displayed a message stating "We couldn't finish installing OS Recovery. Something went wrong while we were trying to install OS Recovery. Don't worry, we'll keep trying to install the application in the background, and then we'll let you know once we've finished".

Does anyone know if the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.5.0.16041 installed by SA v3.10.3.3 on 21-Oct-2021 is the latest available version?

After re-booting my machine this morning I ran a manual update check with the latest SA v3.10.4.18 and it can't find an available update for my current SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.5.0.16041. However, SA v3.10.4.18 still recommends an update for the Realtek Memory Card Reader Driver v10.0.18362.31252 (which I always decline) so SA manual update checks seems to be working correctly, and there's no indication that SA is trying to finish a update for my SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools. Here are the version numbers of my installed Dell programs at Control Panel | Programs | Programs, which indicates that the Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update v5.4.1.14594 (originally installed by SA on 24-Apr-2021) was re-installed on 20-Nov-2021 while SA was self-updating to v3.10.4.18.

Recently purchased Dell Vostro 3400 & every thing was running well. However, for the past 2 weeks, in Dell SA Version [3.10.4.18], "Get drivers & downloads" (GDD) doesn't work. Also, if I click Run All in SA, GDD being the first in the home page, runs for nearly 10 mins, hangs up at 99%, pops error message and aborts running the other 3 processes i.e. Scan H/w, Tune Performance, Clean up Files & Optimize Network. So, to work around this problem, I omit GDD & Run the other processes INDIVIDUALLY. Then I Run GDD individually to only see that the error recur & SA freezing at GDD 99%.

As advised by Dell tech. experts in live chat, I have uninstalled & reinstalled the SA maybe about 10 times or even more, but problem is not resolved. Few days back, Dell expert even took remote control of my PC, updated BIOS (which was already upto date), ran all the troubleshoot options & COULD NOT FIND ANY ISSUE that could affect proper functioning of Dell SA. So, he signed off saying in any case I can download latest Drivers & Downloads from Support for Vostro 3400 | Drivers & Downloads | Dell India

And Dell has closed this Service Request as resolved, which is factually incorrect but I feel that bugging Dell any further (over and above the nearly 7-8 hours cumulative so far)  will not give any solution.

So, for the past 4 days I do this: Check for updates using the above URL and then Run the other 4 processes in SA.

I read online that one of the community members used "Alienware Update" & overcame SA failure of GDD.

Request one of the experts to please advise.

Thank you for reaching out to the Dell Community Forum. We have replied to you via private message.
Also, I see that you have posted the system service tag details on the forum. For security reasons, I'd recommend you edit or delete the post that contains the tag or personal information.

I received email from Dell EMC Community from  email ID that does not allow replies asking for some information. How do I send the personal info to Dell Community other than posting the details here. I have removed personal info

Click the blue DELL-Cares username. Their profile page will appear. On the right click, "Send this user a private message".

Hi tuglaq54:

Are you still looking for help, or did Dell Support's remote reinstall of SupportAssist solve your "Get Drivers & Downloads"  problem? I noticed that DELL-Jesse L marked your post <above> as the solution to my thread, but a clean reinstall of SupportAssist did not solved my own problem with installation of the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools update so I asked DELL-Jesse L to return this thread back to its status of "Unsolved".

I'm not an expert, but if you still require assistance let us know your operating system and which antivirus / anti-malware program(s) you use for real-time protection and I'll see if I can help. If you have a Win 10 or Win 11 OS let us know the version and build shown at Settings | System | About | Windows Specifications [or open a Run dialog box (press the Windows + R keys) and enter winver].

If you received an email notification that DELL-Cares sent a private message to your Dell user account, you can also sign in to the forum and click on the Messages (envelope) icon in the top-right corner of any forum webpage to open your private Inbox where you can read and reply to private messages from DELL-Cares and safely submit your unique Service Tag. See the section titled "Private Messenger" in the forum Help page at https://www.dell.com/community/help/faqpage/title/pm for further instructions.

Note that the Drivers & Downloads tab on the support page at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-ca/product-support/product/vostro-14-3400-laptop/drivers for Vostro 3400 does not offer updates for the SupportAssist Recovery Tools. This system recovery software will only be detected as an available update if you use a Dell utility like SupportAssist or Dell Update.

If you go to Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features what version of Dell SupportAssist Remediation (an alternate name for the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools) is installed on your Vostro 3400? If you read my 11-Feb-2022 thread Any Problems Installing SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.5.1.16141? it shows that SupportAssist recommends I install the latest v5.5.1.16141, but I have declined that update for the reasons described in that thread and currently have v5.5.0.16046.

Assuming you have a 64-bit Win 10 OS, do you have Dell Update installed, and if so does a check for updates run to completion? If you want  to install this program the support page for your Vostro 3400 currently recommends Dell Update Windows Universal Application v4.4.0.

Dell Vostro 3400 Support Page Dell Update Windows Universal Application 17 Feb 2022.png

Any time I need to reinstall SupportAssist I use DELL-Chris M's instructions at SA Uninstall/Reinstall and uninstall all SupportAssist-related programs (e.g., Dell SupportAssist, Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update, Dell SupportAssist Remediation, etc., if installed) before reinstalling SupportAssist. In a few instances my reinstalled SupportAssist program still didn't work correctly if I followed those instructions exactly as written, so instead of uninstalling from Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features I now go one step further and uninstall these Dell programs using Revo Uninstaller Free in Aggressive Mode to clean up any stray registry entries and files that could be left behind by the Control Panel uninstall.
