SupportAssist is very sick

I have been having problems with SA/ It is now only scanning the Drivers and Hardware. The others show that it is preparing....on and on. I've been trying to research how I can resolve this. As I've read here it is quite a problem. I'm thinking of uninstalling the one that came with my Dell Inspirion 5490 A10. Then reinstalling a new one. !st stupid question..will I lose all my information Name. profile, service tag #, etc? I see there is a download on both Dell and Windows.  All the information Ive read on this has me a bit scared to try this. Senior 77 +  I'll have to copy and print all the directions. I'll download all the links I need. Any other suggestions or ideas?

Hi FLGranny:

Dell employee DELL-Nathalia M's posted instructions for installing the current SupportAssist v3.12.3.5 (released 11-Oct-2022) on 19-Oct-2022 in Michael.Strachan's Dell Support Assist Fails to Install that might work for you. I haven't used these instructions myself but here are a few hints that might help.

Step # 1 of DELL-Nathalia M's instructions advise that users begin by removing previous SupportAssist installations using the Microsoft Install and Uninstall troubleshooter. That troubleshooter should guide you through the process of removing SupportAssist from your computer but if you need help with this troubleshooter then read Method V of the Dell support article Windows 11, and Windows 10: Various Methods to Uninstall Problematic Programs and Apps.

Step # 2 of DELL-Nathalia M's instructions also advise that users have the older .NET Runtime v6.0.9 (rel. 13-Sep-2022), and not the current v6.10.0 (rel. 11-Oct-2022), installed on their system before they reinstall SupportAssist with the .msi standalone installer.  That suggests that the current v3.12.3.5 installer has a bug and is not smart enough skip over the installation of .NET Runtime v6.0.9 when a newer (and more secure) version of .NET Runtime v6.0.x is already installed.

You can check at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features to see which versions of the Microsoft .NET (Core) Runtime are currently installed on your computer.  From my Insprion 5584 / Win 10 Pro v21H2 laptop (note that I haven't bothered to uninstall the unsupported .NET Runtime v5.0.17 yet, which was a system requirement for the previous SupportAssist v3.11.4.29) :

Step # 3 advises that you reinstall SupportAssist using the latest standalone .msi installer (SupportAssistx64-3.12.3.5.msi). Save that installer to your desktop, right-click the .msi file, and choose "Run as Administrator". If that installer doesn't run correctly then download and run the "regular" online stub installer SupportAssistInstaller.exe that is available on the SupportAssist for Home PCs download page. This .exe stub installer is the installer that Dell normally recommends and it should be able to manage the entire download and installation process for you (again, right-click the .exe file and choose "Run as Administrator"). Delphine R reported <here> that the regular SupportAssistInstaller.exe stub installer can be used in Step # 3 of DELL-Nathalia M's instructions instead of the standalone offline .msi installer, but Delphine R did not mention their Dell computer model or Widows OS.

If SupportAssist v3.12.3.5 still doesn't run correctly after reinstalling with DELL-Nathalia M's instructions please let us know if your service warranty has expired yet, and just confirm that you have an Inspiron 5490 All-in-One (AIO) (i.e., not an Inspiron 5490 laptop).  It would also be helpful to know your Windows operating system [if Win 10 or Win 11 please include your edition (e.g., Home, Pro, etc.), version, and OS build number shown at Settings | System | About | Windows Specifications] and which antivirus you use. If you aren't sure which Inspiron model you have then enter your unique Service Tag at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us?app=products and this should re-direct you to the correct support page for your computer model.
