SupportAssist Installation Failed

A while ago, I tried updating SupportAssist, but the update failed. Therefore, I uninstalled the program; I then tried reinstalling it, but it says that the installation failed.

I followed the instructions in the video for reinstalling SupportAssist , but it is still failing to install.

Is there an issue with the computer?

Hi nathankh:

Is your Dell service warranty still valid?

What is your Dell computer model, antivirus, and Windows operating system? If you have a Win 10 or Win 11 OS please include the edition (Home or Pro), version and build number shown at Settings | System | About | Windows Specifications. It would also be helpful to know the current Dell BIOS version - open a Run dialog box, enter msinfo32 to open your System Information panel, and look for the “BIOS Version/Date” field.

Please read samsuzzoha's 28-Jul-2022 SupportAssist Not Updating for a few suggestions if SupportAssist v3.11.4.29 is not updating or installing correctly.  Note that the minimum system requirements posted <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell> for SupportAssist v3.11.4.29 have changed and MS .NET (Core) Runtime v5.0.17 is now required in addition to MS .NET Framework v4.7.2 or higher. From my Inspiron 5584:

Win 10 Pro v21H2 Control Panel SupportAssist v3_11_4_29 and MS NET Runtime v5_0_17 21 Aug 2022.png

There are several users currently having issues installing or running the latest SupportAssist v3.4.11.29 (rel. 23-Jun-2022) and many have decided to wait for Dell to release a new version of SupportAssist that will hopefully install and run correctly on their system.  If you decide to do this you can install the Dell Update v4.x application recommended on the support page for your Dell computer model and unique Service Tag (I currently use Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.6.0 on my Inspiron 5584) and use Dell Update v4.x to check for available Dell software and driver updates.

Since the release of the new  version of SupportAssist it have had problems with the installer. My advice is to wait for dell to fix the installer. When fixed it should install automatically as before. I have stopped trying to find a solution for this SA update.

Hello Imacri,

My computer's operating system is Windows 10 Home, Version 10.0.19044 Build 19044.

The BIOS version is 1.17.0, 4/19/2022

The warranty has already expired for quite a while, but SupportAssist did not have trouble updating and reinstalling right away.

Hi nathankh:

Please let us know your Dell computer model (e.g. XPS 15 7590) and whether the Microsoft .NET Runtime v5.0.17 is installed (check at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features).  As I mentioned <above>, this .NET Runtime is a new system requirement for SupportAssist v3.11.4.29 (released 23-Jun-2022).

If your SupportAssist installation problem occurs on the same XPS 15 7590 you mentioned in some of your previous posts it would also be helpful to know if you have installed either the Dell Command | Update 4.6.0 (the old-style Win32 installer for Win 8.1 or higher) or Dell Command | Update Windows Universal v4.6.0 (the newer Universal Windows Platform app for Win 10 or Win 11 only) released on 25-Aug-2022 that are listed <here> on the XPS 15 7590 support page. If one of those Dell Comnand | Update applications is already installed let us know if it launches correctly and is able to check for available updates for your system (see my comment below about BIOS updates). Note that I prefer to use the Windows Universal Platform (UWP) version of Dell Update on my own Inspiron 5584 / Win 10 laptop.

As a first troubleshooting step download a fresh copy of the SupportAssistInstaller.exe from the SupportAssist for Home PCs download page and save it to your desktop. Then close your browser and other open programs, right-click on SupportAssistInstaller.exe, and choose "Run as Administrator". If the installation fails again let us know the exact error message you see.

Further to ThomasATT's comment <above>, crimsom reported on 27-Aug-2022 in 17 R5, SupportAssist x64 v3.12.5.0 or v3.12.1.180 Installation Invalid that a new SupportAssist v3.12.1.180 was delivered to their Alienware 17 R5 laptop but doesn't launch correctly from the shortcut created by the installer. My SupportAssist v3.11.4.29 currently reports that I'm using the latest version of SupportAssist, so I'm not sure how long it will be before SupportAssist v3.12.x goes into wide release.

ASIDE:

Assuming you have a XPS 15 7590, the current BIOS version listed on the support page <here> for that model is Dell XPS 15 7590 System BIOS v1.18.0 (released 09-Aug-2022).  If Dell Command | Update runs correctly on your machine and recommends a BIOS update I would suggest you decline that update for now.  I never allow SupportAssist or Dell Update to install a BIOS update on my Inspiron 5584 - I always download the standalone .exe installer from the support page for my Inspiron 5584 and save it to my desktop, close all my open programs, right-click the .exe installer, and choose "Run as Administrator". There are even some users who don't feel this "Update from Windows" method is safe and prefer to use the "Update from BIOS Boot Menu" method using a removable USB thumb drive. Both these methods are described in the detailed release notes <here> for the latest Dell XPS 15 7590 System BIOS v1.18.0  (see the section titled "Installation Instructions").
