SupportAssist installation failed no internet connection

After upgrading to the latest 3.14 SA version  the application worked for a couple of weeks and suddenly stuck. I uninstalled it successfully but  I cannot reinstall it. No internet connection available. (misleading message).  I run win 10 22h2 latest build on a vostro 3460 machine.

Hi JohnDin:

I uninstalled SupportAssist v3.x from my Inspiron 5584 a few months ago (I prefer to use Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.x to check for available updates) but I'll offer a few suggestions while you're waiting for assistance from one of the SupportAssist users.

If you download and save a fresh copy of the SupportAssistInstaller.exe installer (available <here>) to you Windows desktop and then right-click the .exe file and choose "Run as Administrator" does the installer run to completion? If that works, see my 04-Jan-2022 post in Sidscrat's SupportAssist Will Not Install.

If you use a VPN, you should also try temporarily turning off your VPN just in case it is interfering with the connection to the backend Dell servers during the installation process.

If none of this helps you might want to try a clean reinstall of SupportAssist as instructed in Dell employee Dell ChrisM's SA Uninstall/Reinstall. Note that these instructions ask you to uninstall all SupportAssist-related programs (Dell SupportAssist, Dell SupportAssist Remediation, Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update, etc.) COntrol Panel | Programs | Programs and Features before trying to reinstall SupportAssist.

Hi Imacri,

Thank you for your answer, I've tried all the suggestions found in the web, but a windows reinstallment, with no result.

Hi JohnDin:

The release notes <here> for SupportAssist v3.14.x note that Microsoft .NET (Core) Runtime v6.0.14 or higher is a system requirement. When you go to Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features what version(s) of the MS .NET Runtime are listed? From my Inspiron 5584 / Win 10 v22H2 laptop:

Win 10 Pro v22H2 Control Panel MS NET Runtimes Installed 25 Jun 2023.png

According to those SupportAssist v3.14.x release notes if the latest .NET Runtime v6.0.x is missing from your system then it should be automatically installed when SupportAssistInstaller.exe is run. However, if .NET Runtime v6.0.14 or higher is not currently installed on your system you might want to try installing the latest version first from https://dotnet.microsoft.com/en-us/download/dotnet/6.0/runtime [I'm not certain, but I assume you would choose the appropriate x86 (32-bit OS) or x64 (64-bit OS) version of the "Run desktop apps" Windows installer] and then see if SupportAssistInstaller.exe runs to completion.

If you mean that you followed each step in Dell employee Dell ChrisM's SA Uninstall/Reinstall and still can't get SupportAssist to reinstall then see the Dell support video at Dell SupportAssist Clean Reinstall. There are instructions in that video on how to use the Microsoft Troubleshooter tool and/or manually delete orphaned SupportAssist services and files that are sometimes left behind by a Control Panel uninstall and might need to be removed before you can reinstall SupportAssist.

Just an aside, but the support page <here> for your Vostro 3460 shows that the last BIOS update released for your legacy model was Dell Vostro 3460 System BIOS version A19 (rel. 15-Oct-2013).  I also noticed that your Vostro 14 3460 is not listed as a compatible system for the latest Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.9.0 app (rel. 09-May-2023) when I searched for your Vostro model at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-ca/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=34ynx. I don't know what SupportAssist version was installed on your Vostro 3460 before you uninstalled it, but perhaps you're having problems installing the latest SupportAssist v3.14.x now because of the age of your BIOS firmware and hardware drivers.

Your Vostro 3460 support page shows that Dell hasn't released a software or firmware/driver update for your legacy model since late 2020, so it's unlikely that SupportAssist would be able to find newer updates for your legacy Vostro model even if you managed to reinstall this software.

Hi Imacri,

I followed the instructions stated in your text above without success. I notice that when I installed the  new version 3.14 it worked fine for a couple of weeks. Now as you can see from following log, I have no authority to download the application

ERROR Dell.SupportAssist.Client.Utilities.RegistryUtility - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Dell\SupportAssist ProManage : Not exists

ERROR Dell.SupportAssist.Client.DownloadManager.DownloadManager - Failed to initiate the download of the file: SUPPORTASSISTAGENTCATALOG.CAB | Status Code: Forbidden

ERROR Dell.SupportAssist.Client.AutoUpdateUtilities.AutoUpdateWrapper - Download of https://dl.dell.com/serviceability\catalog\SUPPORTASSISTAGENTCATALOG.CAB failed due to Failed to initiate download. Status code: Forbidden

Hi JohnDin:

If nothing I've suggested so far has worked (e.g., right-clicking on the downloaded SupportAssistInstaller.exe file and choosing "Run as Administrator") and your computer  hasn't experienced any new issues since Windows Update installed the June 2023 Patch Tuesday updates (released 13-Jun-2023) then I'm afraid I'm running out of ideas.

If you haven't already done so you might want to  run System File Checker (sfc /scannow) and DISM commands like Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth from an elevated command prompt as instructed in the ghacks.net article Use DISM to Fix Issues SFC Can't to see if those scans can find any issues with your current Windows system files.  From recent scans of my Inspiron 5584 / Win 10 Pro v22H2 laptop:

Win 10 Pro v22H2 Command Prompt DISM SFC No Issues Found EDITED 12 Jun 2023.png

_____________________________________________

I personally found that Dell SupportAssist was too buggy and used too much RAM and CPU on my Inspiron 5584 so I uninstalled it a few months ago (see my 22-Mar-2023 post in my thread Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update Rolled Back to v5.5.4.16189) and found I could manage without this software. Is there any particular reason why you need to reinstall SupportAssist?

As I mentioned <above>, your Vostro 3460 is no longer supported by Dell and they haven't posted any new software or driver updates <here> on the Vostro 3460 support page since 2020, so even if you manage to reinstall SupportAssist it's unlike it would be able to find any available updates unless you've recently upgraded your OS to Win 10. If you'd like to manually check for updates go to the Drivers & Downloads tab of the Vostro 3460 support page at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-ca/product-support/product/vostro-3460/drivers, ensure that Windows 10 OS is selected as your operating system, choose the "This Device" tab as shown below and enter your unique Service Tag when prompted. This should display a filtered list of any Win 10-compatible software and driver updates that match the specific hardware components originally installed in your Vostro 3460 at the factory.  Post back if you need help finding the current driver versions of your hardware components in Windows' Device Manager.

If you want to perform a hardware diagnostic you can run Dell's F12 ePSA (enhanced Pre-boot System Assessment) diagnostic from your BIOS as instructed on page 51 of the Dell Vostro 3460 Owner's Manual - see the Dell support video How to Run ePSA Diagnostics for a demonstration. Also keep in mind that your Windows 10 OS has its own built-in hardware diagnostics at Settings | Update & Security | Troubleshoot | Additional Troubleshooters.
