SupportAssist does not create a restore point

Hi SupportAssist does not create a restore point for system repair, even though it is enabled in its settings. I'm just getting a message that my disk is being analyzed for its health to make the first repair point. Is there a script or troubleshooter to force a system repair image?

Hi duskodukadule:

I uninstalled all SupportAssist-related software (including SupportAssist and Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery) from my Inspiron 5584 in March 2023 but I think most of my comments below are still relevant.

Dell system repair points (snapshots) are created by a program called Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery (also known as Dell SupportAssist Remediation or System Repair).  If SupportAssist is working correctly and System Repair is turned ON in your SupportAssist settings then Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery should create a system repair point about 30 min after your system is re-booted and save that system repair point in a hidden, protected folder at C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\Snapshots. **

I don't know of any way to manually trigger Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery to create a new system repair point, but here are two things you should check:

  1. Open your Windows Services and confirm the Dell SupportAssist Remediation service has a status of "Running".  NOTE: The services called Dell Client Management Service, Dell SupportAssist and Dell TechHub should also have a Status of "Running".
  2. Open the Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery settings manager from Control Panel (Control Panel | System and Recovery | SupportAssist OS Recovery if you have a Win 10 OS), select the Settings tab, confirm System Repair is turned ON, and note the last date a system repair point was successfully created on your system in the Current Repair Points section.

See the images I posted 10-Mar-2023 in Terry Morses' SupportAssist: Won't Run, Can't Uninstall or Reinstall It that I captured when I was using Dell SupportAssist Remediation v5.5.5.16458 and System Repair was turned OFF.

*  NOTE: To replace Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery I now use Macrium Reflect Free v8.0 imaging software (unsupported since Jan 2024 but still fully functional) to create the occasional full disk image of my entire hard drive just in case I ever have to perform an emergency system recovery.

** NOTE: You can use TreeSize Free (run with Administrator rights and the option to view Hidden Items enabled in File Explorer) to view the contents of the hidden, protected C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\Snapshots folder.  Here's an old image I captured with Tree Size Free Portable on 03-May-2021 when System Repair was turned ON showing this folder was using over 20 GB even though the maximum allocated disk space was set to 15 GB in my SupportAssist settings
