Support Assistant 3.12.3.5 and Dell Customer Support
After waiting for the upgrade from 3.11.4 that used Microsoft dot Net Core v5.0.14 which ended support on May 22, 2022, this version 3.12.3.5 was finally released for my two Vostro 3888 computers the week of October 10, 2022. I then went into installed software and removed dot Net Core v5.0.14. Using the command line "dotnet -list-runtimes" verified that v5.0.14 was no longer present. Note that LTS for dot Net v3.1.30 will reach EOL October 30, 2022.
Dell system support has been much better than the support from HP or HP Enterprise which is why I am replacing my systems with Dell equipment. That said the following are concerns with Support Assistant:
1. More timely updates. Intel reports that there are two updates available for my two systems, but Support assistant has neither. This download record installs the Windows® 10 and Windows 11* Wi-Fi package drivers 22.170.0 for the Wi-Fi 6E/Wi-Fi 6/9000/8000 series Intel® Wireless Adapters. Version: 19.51.42.2Release date: October 11, 2022Size: 29.47 MB; and This download installs Intel® Graphics Driver 31.0.101.3430/31.0.101.2111 for Xe Dedicated, 6th-12th Gen Intel® Core™ Processor Graphics, and related Intel Atom®, Pentium®, and Celeron® processors. Driver version varies depending on the Intel Graphics in the system. Version: 31.0.101.2111Release date: September 27, 2022Size: 1230.23 MB. Some driver updates show in Windows Update as much as a month before Dell Support Assistant show the available. Also, Microsoft has a security update that can (and should) only be done through a Dell update. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/kb5012170-security-update-for-secure-boot-dbx-august-9-2022-72ff5eed-25b4-47c7-be28-c42bd211bb15
2. New Release Notes at https://dl.dell.com/content/manual39063929-supportassist-for-home-pcs-version-3-11-4-release-notes.pdf?language=en-us&ps=true and User Guide at https://dl.dell.com/content/manual40748378-supportassist-for-home-pcs-version-3-11-4-user-s-guide.pdf?language=en-us&ps=true could be improved to better explain the details for those of us who have a more technical interest.
3. Support Assistant opens the DISM.log file and maintains it as open as long as the related services are running.
4. The Dell BIOS Firmware updates that are provided to Microsoft for Windows Updates are called 0.2.15.0 where Dell Support Assistant calls them 2.15.0 so it looks like the firmware update still needs to be installed from Windows Update.
5. The Dell logs are all over the place. C:\ProgramData\Dell\SupportAssistServiceSubAgent\SupportAssistService.00.log. C:\ProgramData\Dell\Dell TechHub\DellTechHub.log C:\Users\dlann\AppData\Local\Packages\ScreenovateTechnologies.DellMobileConnect_0vhbc3ng4wbp0\LocalCache\Local\Dell\DellMobileConnect\scremote.DellMobileConnectStartup.log C:\ProgramData\Dell\DTP.Instrumentation.SubAgent\DTP.Instrumentation.SubAgent.01.log and there may be more. this may be fine when dealing with a Dell support technician but is a pain for reviewing when something does not work as expected.
Also, a shout out to lmacri for his efforts to help people here.
