Support Assist not downloading, possibly corrupted

Inspiron 15 3520

Inspiron 15 3520

So recently I was installing an update using SupportAssist which was a SupportAssist recovery plugin, the update was stuck at installing 100%, so I closed SupportAssist, and reopened it. When I tried to check for updates again, it said "An operation is in progress, please wait for it to end" or something similar. So, I uninstalled SupportAssist and tried to reinstall it. I followed Dell's instructions for a complete reinstallation, but the installer screen is stuck at

After a while, the cancel button disappears and it closes. I deleted the services required, and deleted the Remediation and os recovery tool, along with the ones instructed in the video, and managed to install the update using Dell Update (which also was glitching out before I deleted the services). Now, I can't install drivers after the end of the year since Dell is stopping Dell Update. Please tell me how to reinstall SupportAssist, I have tried even deleting all SupportAssist files off my computer. Also, when I try to install drivers from the website, before the services were deleted, it just said, Initializing, updates will begin soon. And when I fully wiped SupportAssist off my PC, it took me to the screen where it tells me to install SupportAssist, but when I try to install it, the problems I told before happens. Please help.

For context:

Windows 11 23h2, KB5044380 cumulative update was the last update I got.

Hi @ByeAbhay65 :

I don't know if it's an oversight by Dell or if it's because the Inspiron 15 3520 ships with a Win 11 OS, but if I browse to the instructions for a clean reinstall of SupportAssist at Dell SupportAssist for PCs or and Tablets Installation Issue. and change the product to your model number I get a warning saying "This article does not apply to Inspiron 15 3520".  Also note that the Dell Client Management Service is shared by many Dell utilities, including Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.x, so if this service is removed during the SupportAssist uninstall and you do not re-install SupportAssist your Dell Update v5.x utility may need to be reinstalled before it runs correctly.

Before you do anything as drastic as re-installing your Windows operating system I'd suggest you read employee DELL-Chris M's 10-Jun-2024 topic SupportAssist, "Hardware scan fails", "We ran into a problem" about some of the known bugs in the current SupportAssist v4.0.3.  DELL-Chris M suggests that users having issues with SupportAssist v4.0.3 should uninstall SupportAssist and wait for a new SupportAssist release that (hopefully) includes some bug fixes.

If Dell still hasn't fixed SupportAssist v4.x before they discontinue support for Dell / Alienware Update v5.x in January 2025 you can go to your Inspiron 15 3520 support page at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/inspiron-15-3520-laptop/drivers, click the "This Device" tab and enter your unique Service Tag, and this should display a filtered list of the Dell software and driver updates that are compatible with your system components. Unfortunately, the blue "Check for Updates" button on that support page will not run unless SupportAssist is installed and functioning correctly.

As of today your Inspiron 15 3520 support page is offering a standalone installer for Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update v5.5.7.18773. If you currently have an older version of this plugin and SupportAssist v4.x and/or Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.x cannot install this update download the standalone installer (Dell-SupportAssist-OS-Recovery-Plugin-for-Dell-Update_42MYF_WIN_5.5.7.18773_A00.EXE, released 14-Jul-202) and save it to your desktop, close your browser, and then right-click the .exe installer and choose "Run as Administrator".
___________________________________________

Just FYI, I uninstalled all SupportAssist-related software from my Inspiron 5584 after my service warranty expired [these programs were too buggy, the "system optimization" scans (Clean Files / Tune Performance / Optimize Network) were too aggressive, and collection of telemetry data hogged too much RAM and CPU - see my 13-Sep-2023 post in bear-o's SupportAssist 3.10.4 Unexpected Issue for further details] and I currently use Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.x to check for available Dell software and drivers updates.  If I need to run a hardware diagnostic I run a F12 ePSA (enhanced Pre-boot System Assessment) scan from my Dell BIOS.  I've also installed Macrium Reflect Free v8.0 disk imaging software to replace Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery (also known as Dell SupportAssist Remediation / System Repair) and I save the occasional full disk image of my hard drive to an external USB backup drive just in case I ever need to perform an emergency recovery of my entire system.  NOTE: Macrium Reflect Free v8.0.x as not been supported since Jan 2024 but is still fully functional; see the June 2023 Tech Republic article Top 5 Free & Reliable Hard Disk Drive Cloning Software for other suggestions.

... Windows 11 23h2, KB5044380 cumulative update was the last update I got

KB5044380 is the early October 22, 2024 Preview build for Win 11 Version 2332 (OS Build 22631.4391).  These optional Preview builds can be very buggy and unless you have a good reason to install a Preview build (e.g., because it includes a critical bug fix to fix BSOD or other serious problem on your system) I would advise you wait and only install the "stable" monthly cumulative updates released on Patch Tuesdays on the second Tuesday of each month.

... Is there any way I can find which drivers to update in "My Device"? I noticed the blue check for updates option doesn't show all the drivers that I can update.

Hi @ByeAbhay65 :

When you say "My Device" do you mean the "This Device" tab on your Inspiron 15 3520 support page at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/inspiron-15-3520-laptop/drivers? If so, the blue "Check for Updates" button on that page uses the SupportAssist API to check for available updates for software and drivers that are currently installed on your system.  If the Dell/Alienware Digital Delivery v5.x app is not installed on your system, for example, then Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.x, SupportAssist v4.x and that blue "Check for Updates" button will ignore any new updates posted for that software.

The main window of the Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.x app has a link labeled "System Information" that displays the current driver version for many of your hardware components, but I prefer to use Windows' Device Manager to look up this information.  For example, Device Manager shows my Intel UHD Graphics 620 driver is currently v27.20.100.9664 ...

... which is the same driver version recommended on my Inspiron 15 5584 support page <here>, so without SupportAssist v4.x or Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.x to check for available updates I would still I know that I have the latest graphics driver recommended by Dell that is certified for my Dell BIOS ***.

There are several updates listed on the support page for my Inspiron 15 5584 that I know I don't need.  For example, after I click the "This Device" tab and enter my unique Service Tag the filtered list shows that Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update v5.5.7.18773 (rel. 14-Jul-2023) is compatible with my system.  However, I uninstalled that plugin (and all my other SupportAssist-related software) from my Inspiron 15 5584 over a year ago so I know I can safely ignore that update.

** NOTE: There are several reports in this forum where updating to newer hardware drivers recommended by the original manufacturer (e.g. Intel, NVIDIA, Realtek, etc.) that were not certified by Dell caused serious problems.  For example, see fabioluzo's May 2024 topic Vostro 3520 Keeps Crashing who encountered constant BSODs until they rolled back their Intel and NDIVIA graphics drivers to the versions recommended by Dell on their Vostro 3520 support page.

@DELL-Cares Hi, thank you for responding. First, I want to clear up that in no way do I feel any negativity towards Dell or it's staff, I understand that you are trying your best. Unfortunately, as I am soon going away on holiday I don't have time to bring back all my files if I perform an OS reinstallation. I am incredibly sorry if this is an inconvenience, but an alternate solution is best.

@lmacri I meant in the Dell website, now should I install all the drivers (except BIOS) that are listed in "My Device"?

Hey @lmacri, when I get 24h2, do you think the issue will be fixed? (since downloading 24h2 uses the OS-swap method)

Hi @ByeAbhay65 :

No, when you click "This Device" on your Inspiron 15 3520 support page at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/inspiron-15-3520-laptop/drivers and enter your unique Service Tag all this does is display a filtered list of all the Dell software and hardware drivers that are compatible with the hardware components (e.g., hard drive, wireless/WiFi card, graphics card, etc.) that shipped from the factory with your computer. That list doesn't tell you what software and drivers, if any, are out-of-date and need to be updated.

Utilities like SupportAssist v4.x and Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.x are software updater apps that will actually check to see if any of the Dell software and hardware drivers that match your Service Tag are out-of-date and will offer to install those recommended updates for you.

Even though SupportAssist v4.0.3 isn't working correctly on your Inspiron 15 3520 at the moment (which is understandable given all the known bugs in the current v4.0.3 described in employee DELL-Chris M's 10-Jun-2024 topic SupportAssist, "Hardware scan fails", "We ran into a problem") your previous posts suggested that Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.4.0 is installed on your system and working correctly.  If that is correct, which updates does Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.4.0 currently suggest for your system?
___________________________________

Here's an example from my own Inspiron 15 5594.  When I click "This Device" on my Inspiron 5584 support page and enter my unique Servicee Tag it displays a filtered list of the 24 Dell software programs and hardware drivers that match my system components.  Note the header in the image below which states that "This list details all available downloads for your Inspiron 15 5584, including those noted as critical or automatically installed during a recent update.  Some may already exist on your device."

However, when I check for updates with Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.4.0 it only finds one available update. As I mentioned in my previous replies, I uninstalled all SupportAssist-related software from my laptop over a year ago and don't want to reinstall them, so I always decline (uncheck) any Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update v5.5.x update offered by Dell Update for Windows Universal to prevent this plugin from being reinstalled.

Hi  @ByeAbhay65 :

You would have to ask Dell customer support since they are the ones who have been collecting diagnostic logs since April 2024 and should have some idea by now why SupportAssist v4.0.3 is so buggy.  I doubt, however, that an update of your OS to Win 11 v24H2 will fix your problem. There are many Win 10 users having similar problems with SupportAssist v4.0.3 so these issues aren't unique to Windows 11 and/or Win 11 v23H2.

FYI, the release notes for SupportAssist at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/dell-supportassist-pcs-tablets/docs indicate a new version of SupportAssist was just released on 06-Nov-2024 that requires Microsoft .NET Desktop Runtime version 8.0.x *** so you should check with Dell customer support again to see if they believe another clean reinstall might solve your problem.

IMPORTANT NOTE: SupportAssist v4.0.3 requires Microsoft .NET Desktop Runtime version 6.0.x which will reach end-of-support tomorrow on 12-Nov-2024.

__________________________________________

Just an aside, but Win 11 v24H2 is still very buggy (see the known issues listed at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/release-health/status-windows-11-24h2) and behaving more like a beta test version these days, and I would avoid upgrading your Win 11 OS to v24H2 until most of these known bugs are resolved.

Gibson Research Corporation offers a free utility call InControl at https://www.grc.com/incontrol.htm that allows you to temporarily set your target release version to Windows 11 / Version 23H2 to postpone the Feature Update to v24H2.  Note that Windows Update will continue to deliver monthly Quality updates and "regular" security updates for v23H2 each Patch Tuesday while InControl is active.  When you're ready for the v24H2 Feature Update all you have to do is change your target release version in InControl to Windows 11 / 24H2.
