"software is installed on supported systems only" error message

Inspiron 3471

Inspiron 3471

Hi, I've had issues with Support Assist having failed after my PC was 1 year old.  As I didn't want to wipe the whole computer to re-install everything, I had been manually reviewing and adding critical updates based on my Service Tag.   For the last 6 months these have failed to install - the error message is:

"this application is supported on supported systems only.  If you have received this message in error, please contact technical support"

Hi Lindemon:

What is your Windows operating system?  If Win 10 or Win 11 please include version and build shown at  Settings | System | About | Windows Specifications [or open a Run dialog box (Windows key + R) and enter winver].  What version of Dell SupportAssist is listed at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features?

If you haven't already done so, try installing the Dell Update for Windows Universal v4.9.0 app (Dell-Update-Windows-Universal-Application_34YNX_WIN_4.9.0_A02_02.EXE, released 09-May-2023) currently offered on your Inspiron 3471 support page  at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-ca/product-support/product/inspiron-3471-desktop/drivers.  If that app installs correctly then run a check for updates and see if that Dell Update app detects any available updates for your system.

@lmacri I'm running Windows 10: version 22H2 (OS build 19045.3324).

I tried installing the Dell Windows update you recommended but this also failed - "only suitable for Dell Hardware".

@Linedemon :

Sorry, I vaguely recall reading about a similar "only suitable for Dell hardware" error message in another thread in this forum but can't find it now.  I'll keep searching and let you know if I can locate it.

In the mean time, what edition of Windows 10 v22H2 (e.g., Home, Professional, etc) are you using, and are you certain you aren't running Windows 10 in "S" mode that only allows installation of apps from the Microsoft Store?  If you go to Settings | System About | Windows Specifications it should say something like "Windows 10 Home in S mode" if you are using "S" mode - see the How-To Geeks article What Is Windows 10 or Windows 11 in S Mode? for more information.

What is your current BIOS version? If you aren't sure open a Run dialog box (Windows + R keys), enter msinfo32 to open your System Information window, and look for "BIOS Version/Date" in the system summary. Note: If you don't have the recommended Inspiron 3671/3471 System BIOS v1.18.2 (rel. 23-Aug-2023) that is listed on your Inspiron 3471 support page at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/inspiron-3471-desktop/drivers then just report back and let us know your current version - do not try to update your BIOS yet.  From my Inspiron 5584:

If SupportAssist is currently installed on your system, what is the version number shown at Control Panel | Programs | Programs And Features? I uninstalled SupportAssist and all my SupportAssist-related software a few months but according to the documents at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/dell-supportassist-pcs-tablets/docs you should have SupportAssist 3.14.0 (rel. 27-Apr-2023) or higher.

Have you ever reinstalled or tried to repair/recover your Windows operating system?  I've heard of other users who could not install Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps posted by Dell on the Microsoft Store (which probably includes SupportAssist and Dell Update for Windows Universal since they both require a secondary APPx module - see my 06-Nov-2022 post <here> for more information about APPx modules) because their Windows OS re-install removed the registry key in their Windows registry that designates their computer as certified  Dell computer.  See employee DELL-Chris M's 24-Sep-2021 post in Can't Install My Dell from Windows Store for more information.

Further to DELL-Chris M's comments, and assuming this problem occurs on your Inspiron 3471 desktop, open a Run dialog box (Windows key + R) and enter regedit to open your registry editor.  Then browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Store and check if the value of StoreContentModifier is "Dell_Insipron".  From my Inspiron 5584:

I would also check to make sure your unique Service Tag is correct in you BIOS.  See the section "Method 4: Using the Command Line" of the support article Find the Service Tag of Your Dell Desktop or All-in-One on how to enter the command wmic bios get serialnumber in a command prompt and confirm the Service Tag (which is just the serial number of your motherboard) matches the Service Tag on the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) sticker on the body of your computer.  Note: Don't post your private Service Tag in the forum. From my Inspiron 5584:
