SA OS Recovery, cloning not working

Good time to everyone.

I have a DELL LAPTOP INSPIRON born with an nvme m.2 SSD 256 gb (C:) PLUS 1 tb internal hdd (D:)

C: with os is partitioned in 5 parts, that i think are uefi bios plus 3 recovery files (?), and is the drive that i want to clonedisk.png

Since i want to upgrade to a larger SSD i came up to buy a new one and clone the old SSD.

I would like to save everything right the way it is, recovery partition too... mantain support assist and all other dell stuffs that helps.

So i boot my system with f12 and start "Support Assist OS recovery".. i choose to CLONE the entire SSD to an external USB DEVICE and i simply press - CONTINUE.

So the process start and it goes with success for like 20 or 30 minutes.

Since the external usb is 3.0 transfer speed is not so fast, but everytime i GET an "UNEXPECTED ERROR" and clone never complete.

I have tried 2 different external usb drives (a bit dated but 3.0).

I have no other nvme m2 ports on my dell and i canno't directly clone ssd to ssd.

I ve read about macrium or other tools but i think that for mantaining all bootable partitions etc etc i cannot clone in a windows environement (plus, as i told, i cannot load 2 nvme at the same time).

Does anyone have an idea why i get that persistent error?

Try using Macrium Reflect. You can clone all partitions from one drive to another, and you can resize partitions as well, which in your case, would be the OS (C:) drive. You should have better success with Macrium Reflect.

thanks for your answer!

As i  read in this forum, using macrium will compromise the use of DELL OS RECOVERY, plus i would need another pc to clone mine SSD.

I would like to make out why cloning procedure always fails

I had the same problem on my Latitude 7420. Latest BIOS, etc. Trying to clone from the 256GB internal drive to a 1TB NVMe SSD in a USB-C adapter. Gets to the end of the clone and errors. Win11 23H2, Bitlocker suspended.

I tried reinstalling Dell OS Recovery 5.5.7, ran Dell Command Update which installed Dell SupportAssist Remediation 5.5.10, and... still fails. This would be a really nice feature if it actually worked.

Is there no fix for this? I just ran into it on a Latitude 3520, trying to upgrade the drive to a bigger one (both Dell NVMe). I'm about ready to jump to HP or Linux.

Getting same error. Have tried chkdsk to make sure there weren't any disk issues. Have tried restarting, cycling power, and still getting error. Has anyone got this to work?

The problem is Dell is not supporting their customers. The furthest I can get through this is Dell telling me "out of warranty support". Well, that's avoidable when their instructions work or their errors give us information to do anything about it, like check logs, or ask other users, but it seems like Dell's neglectfully or intentionally pushing us to buy more service (nope) or try to hack our computers to see what's going wrong.

The alternative is to reinstall the OEM Windows on another drive and install that. The problem with that is Dell has a bunch of firmware and drive partitions on the OEM install related to it that may or may not be needed for the laptop to function properly.

I need advice from someone who's successfully upgraded the drive to tell us how it worked. I've had dozens of Dell laptops, done a handful of drive upgrades, and not once gotten stuck like this. It's just absolutely absurd right now, and leaving me to trial-and-error, which is incredibly time-consuming.

Now i tried 8 times with different settings with Support Assist OS recovery. Tried Macrium and other cloning apps, nothing worked. T thought whats wrong? Just a year ago i installed 4 different systems without any problems. Then i remembert where to look for a WORKING clone app. MiniTool Partition Wizard Free 10.1 works fine for me

All I can say it appears Dell doesn't actually want us to clone drives but doesn't want to look bad by making it obvious that it's impossible, so until someone figures out how to check what's actually wrong, the feature doesn't exist.

Honestly right now I just want to pull out the OEM drive, put in the new bigger one I bought, install Windows, and see what happens. If I have to go through a rigmarole to get everything to work right, so be it. If it just won't work well, I'm installing Linux and avoiding Dell. This Big Tech amateur nonsense has to stop.
