MyDell update problem on Precision 7540

Hi:

Upon launching MyDell, I received a notification that it needs to be updated.  Clicking "update" takes it to attempt to update, only to fail.  Looking through the web many people have encountered similar issues, with the solution being to manually update the Fusion Service driver - Solved: My Dell update problem - Dell Community

Unfortunately for me though, it appears the Fusion service isn't compatible with my Precision M7540 laptop - I can't find a proper "version" for my laptop, and even when I managed to download it, the Fusion Service installation would fail.

Anyone has any other ideas as to whether is there an updated Fusion Service driver for the Precision 7540 laptop?

Thanks.

Hi AklEngineer:

What is your Windows OS (if Win 10 or Win 11 please include your version and build at Settings | System | About | Windows Specifications) and if you have a Fusion Service shown at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features what is the version number? If the MyDell app is listed at Settings | Apps | Apps and Features what is the version number shown when you click Advanced Options (see image below)?

Did your Precision 7540 ship from the factory with the MyDell installed? I entered that Dell model on the support page for the current Fusion Service v2.0.58 at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=m93kw and chose 64-bit Windows 10 as the OS and it reports that "This driver is not applicable for Precision 7540 with Windows 10, 64-bit". The MyDell support page <here> also says "My Dell is preloaded on all Inspiron, G Series, XPS, and Vostro devices built after 8/22/18" but does not mention Precision laptops.

If you have a Win 10 or Win 11 OS you could try uninstalling MyDell from Settings | Apps | Apps and Features and then installing a fresh copy of the current MyDell v2.0.30 app as instructed in that MyDell support article to see if it installs the required Fusion Service v2.0.58 at the same time, but I'm not confident that would work (and might makes things worse than they already are). The current MyDell v2.0.30 app at https://apps.microsoft.com/store/detail/my-dell/9PN7T3JFPRZ6 on the Microsft Store says "Available on Dell XPS, Inspiron, G Series and Vostro PCs purchased in September 2018 or later. Dell PCs purchased before September 2018 will not have all the features enabled." so I have to assume that MyDell v2.0.30 is not intended for Precision laptops.

Hi Imacri:

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my query.

Below are some answers to your questions:

- Windows Version, build number etc - Windows 10 Enterprise, version 20H2, OS Build 19042.1826

- Fusion Server version numver: 1.92.22.0

- MyDell App version (under Advanced Option): 2.0.30.0

So it appears I already have the latest MyDell app, but yet when I launch it it says I need to install an update which will fail as I believe the Fusion Service won't install on my laptop.

I did have MyDell install when I received the laptop from factory as I didn't install it so I'm puzzled why it didn't work with the update.

Does anyone else have any ideas or solutions...?

Thanks in advance!

Hi AklEngineer:

Did you install the Dell Precision 7540 and 7740 System BIOS v1.20.2 (rel. 23-Jun-2022) that is recommended on the support page <here> for your Precision 7540? If you aren't sure open a Run dialog box, enter msinfo32 to open your System Information panel, and look for the “BIOS Version/Date” field.

When you go to Start | Windows Administrative Tasks | Services does your old Fusion Service v1.92.22.0 actually have a Status of "Running" (see image below)? Have you run Dell Command | Update v4.5.0  recommended <here> on the support page for your Precision 7540 (I prefer to use the Windows Universal UWP app on my Inspiron 5584) to see if this utility recommends the current Fusion Service v2.0.58.0 (rel. 15-Apr-2022)?

Win 10 Pro v21H2 Services Fusion Service Running 28 July 2022.png

As I noted <above> the Fusion Service is not recommended on the support page <here> for the Precision 7540 and the My Dell v2.0.30 app (posted to the Microsoft Store in April 2022) is only available for Dell XPS, Inspiron, G Series and Vostro PCs purchased in September 2018 or later. The fact that you currently have Fusion Service v1.92.22.0 (rel. 10-Nov-2021) but didn't receive the Fusion Service 2.0.38.0 (rel. 13-Apr-2022) update when it was released three months ago also suggests that My Dell and Fusion Service shouldn't have been installed on your Precision 7540. If you expand the Compatible Systems section in those release notes you will see that both those older Fusion Service versions were not recommended for any Precision models, so I'm not sure why the My Dell app was even installed on your Precision 7540 business machine at the factory in the first place.

Your mentioned in your original post that "even when I managed to download it, the Fusion Service installation would fail".  You didn't mention what installer you used or where you found it, but the current Fusion Service v2.0.58.0 installer (Fusion-Service_M93KW_WIN_2.0.58.0_A00.EXE) for 64-bit Win 10 and Win 11 is available for download at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-ca/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=m93kw. - just scroll down to the blue Download button without entering your Service Tag or model.  If you're determined to try and get My Dell v2.0.30 working you could save that installer to your desktop, right-click and choose "Run as Administrator", and then wait to see if the installer eventually runs to completion (note that this installer took a long time to run on my Inspiron 5584) or throws an error message. However, it's not something I would recommend you do since this driver is not recommended for the Precision 7540 and I have no idea if installation could create additional problems on your system. If you have disk imaging software like Macrium Reflect Free I'd suggest you create a full disk image before running this installer just in case your system doesn't boot up correctly after you attempt to install Fusion Service v2.0.58.0 and you have to perform an emergency recovery.
________________________________________________

This likely has nothing to do with your My Dell / Fusion Service problem, but when you purchased your Precision 7540 from Dell did it ship from the factory with an Enterprise edition of Windows 10, and is this computer used in a business environment? I don't know a great deal about Win 10 Enterprise administration but I'm wondering why your OS hasn't updated from v20H2 (OS Build 19042) to v21H2 (OS Build 19044) yet.

I can open the Local Group Policy Editor (i.e., open a Run dialog box and enter gpedit.msc) that comes with my Win 10 Professional OS and then browse to Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | Windows Update | Windows Update for Business | Select the Target Feature Update Version to control how Feature updates (version changes) are controlled. The image below shows I've selected “Windows 10” to prevent my system from unexpectedly upgrading to Windows 11 until I choose to do so, and that I've chosen “21H2” to stay on the current stable Win 10 Version 21H2 (OS Build 19044) until I’m ready to update to the next Version 22H2 (OS Build 19045) when this Feature Update starts rolling out in the Fall of 2022.

Win 10 Pro v21H2 Local Group Policy Editor Target Release Version 16 Jul 2022.png

Does your Win 10 Enterprise edition have a similar Local Group Policy Editor, and if so has it been configured to stay on the old version 20H2 (OS Build 19042), or is your Win 10 Enterprise OS on a Long Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) instead of a Semi-Annual Channel?

Hi lmacri:

Thanks again for your lengthy message, and apologies for the late reply.

For a start, yes I do have the latest BIOS update as you indicated - same version, although the BIOS date was 30/05/2022 and not June. However, the version number is the same.

As for why I'm still on Windows 10 20H2, yes this is used in a corporate/enterprise environment and my IT Dept not sanctionned the update to 21H2 - it is controlled via our Corp's IT Team and I don't want to muck around with it.

I can't answer why MyDell was installed when I received it fresh, that is something strange, but it looks like for whatever reason Dell either decided to stop supporting it for the Precision M7450 or something else happenned in between.

I guess I'll have to live without MyDell - TBH I was trying to use the Dell Power Manager and it prompted an update to MyDell as it said Power Manager was going to be retired - guess Dell never thought that there would be issues for MyDell on selected workstations.

Thanks anyway for your help.
