Missing "Dell Client Management Service"

Dell G5 15 5590

Dell G5 15 5590

Trying to run Support Assist to stay up to date with my drivers and I noticed I'm missing "Dell Client Management Service". Does anybody have a way for me to get that back? My operating system is Microsoft Windows 10 Home, and it's for my Dell G5 15 5590 Laptop.

and it won't connect to the drivers?
it won't even load to the online webpage version because it uses that service to collect the information to search for whats already on your system?

Install Dell Update Windows Universal Application at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-uk/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=gt6ww&oscode=wt64a&productcode=inspiron-15-7567-laptop

This will re-install the Client Manager Services automatically.

Hi, I am running into the same issue (missing Dell Client Management Service), I'm on Windows 11 on a XPS 17 9700, and the suggested option above (re-installing Windows Universal Application) does not bring the service back for me.

Other posts I've seen send people to this page: https://www.dell.com/support/home/it-it/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=vxg5k, but it's for Windows Server versions and does not apply to my case. Any idea on how to install the service again?

Hi ale2x72:

Have you received the latest SupportAssist v4.6.2 announced in employee DELL-Nat M's 04-Dec-2024 post in Stanan's Support Assist Hangs?

If Dell Client Management Service isn't listed in your Windows Services also look for services starting with the word "Alienware".  I have Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.4.0 (but no SupportAssist-related or Alienware software) installed on my Inspiron 5584 and this is what I see at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features (if I search for "Dell") and my Windows Services:

NOTE:  The Fusion Service shown above is a system requirement for the My Dell v2.x UWP app installed on my Inspiron 5584

If you enter your unique Service Tag at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/products which Dell Update v5.4.0 utility (or utilities) released on 31-Jul-2024 are listed on the Drivers and Downloads tab? (NOTE: On this "new" support page you will have to look for matching Applications under all three Critical / Recommended / Optional categories).

The Find Drivers link on your "old" XPS 17 9700 support page at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/xps-17-9700-laptop/drivers lists three possible candidates, including Dell/Alienware Update Windows Universal Application (Dell-Alienware-Update-Windows-Universal-Application_6F25R_WIN_5.4.0_A00.EXE), Dell Command | Update Windows Universal Application (Dell-Command-Update-Windows-Universal-Application_9M35M_WIN_5.4.0_A00.EXE) and the "classic" standalone Dell Command | Update Application (Dell-Command-Update-Application_6VFWW_WIN_5.4.0_A00.EXE), but I'm not sure which one matches your Service Tag.

If your Drivers and Downloads tab only recommends Dell/Alienware Update Windows Universal Application v5.4.0 *** for your Service Tag then download the Dell-Alienware-Update-Windows-Universal-Application_6F25R_WIN_5.4.0_A00.EXE installer and save it to your desktop, close your browser, and right-click that .exe installer and choose "Run as Administrator".

*** NOTE:  This app will reach end of support on 31-Dec-2024 [see the support article at Alienware Update and Dell Update End of Life (EoL) Announcement] but in the mean time installation should restore your Dell/Alienware Client Management Service.

I'm encountering the same problem.

OS: Win 11 24H2

Alienware m15 R4

Followed this tutorial to uninstall SupportAssist (v. 4.0.3) Dell SupportAssist Clean Reinstall (Official Dell Tech Support) - YouTube

Restarted computer and downloaded/ran installer from Explore SupportAssist for Home PCs | Dell US . When I complete installation, I keep seeing version 4.0.3.61632 (under Settings > Installed apps) and can't figure out how to get version 4.6.2 (although I see there may be bugs with that based on other threads).

I also have installed Alienware Update for Windows Universal v5.4.0 (which I'm aware is reaching EoL 12/31/24).

SupportAssist software update won't run for me. Without an ability to get the latest SA version or how to get the Dell Client Management Services installed I'm stuck. I've read through the other thread but most people have found a resolution by somehow getting the latest SA, and outside of the link above which others have referenced I'm unclear how else to get the latest version.

Hi melzie:

I wouldn't be in any rush to install the current SupportAssist v4.6.2 if I were you.  Employee Dell-Brad L just announced today that Dell will begin pushing out a new SupportAssist version 4.6.3 next Tuesday on 24-Dec-2024 to fix serious bugs in v4.6.2  - see their 19-Dec-2024 post in MichaelInParis's Any way to reduce the size of the DTPDB.DB file?. From what I understand from that post, the v4.6.3 update rolling out on 24-Dec-2024 will fix a bug that impacts system performance due to excessive RAM and CPU consumption, and a second update will be released at a later date to fix a second bug that causes database files in the C:\ProgramData\Dell\DTP\DB folder to grow over time and consume excessive amounts of disk space (i.e., typically in the range of 20 - 80 GB).

I suspect you're correct that Dell has pulled SupportAssist v4.6.2 from their download servers because of the seriousness of these bugs and temporarily reverted back to the previous v4.0.3.

NOTE: If you search Settings | Apps for "SupportAssist" you will see that Dell SupportAssist v4.x is comprised of two components - the main Dell SupportAssist application application and a small "helper" SupportAssist APPx module that contain files and credentials required to install and run the main application - and each component as a different version number. I would suggest you always check at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features to find the "correct" version of your main Dell SupportAssist application. See my 16-Sep-2024 post in AnotherJamieRI's "Dell SupportAssist" vs "SupportAssist" vs "Dell Update" vs "Dell Update for Windows Universal" for more information.

@lmacri thank you for your reply. I was still stuck with the previous version of SupportAssist (maybe for the reason mentioned in your other reply to melzie), which failed to check for updates. I tried this method: https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000131491/supportassist-for-pcs-and-tablets-clean-uninstall-and-reinstall which is mentioned by Nat M in several discussions (such as this one) as "DELL accepted solution". Since the Dell Client Manager Service persisted even after uninstalling SupportAssist, I removed the service (as suggested by the method itself), but I had to do it via Command Prompt using the sc command. I did install all the drivers manually from the DELL website, but the service did not come back. The suggested app is the Dell/Alienware Update Windows Universal Application v5.4.0 ***, but it fails to install for some reason: first, it tells me there is an older version installed asking me if I want to update, then it rolls back the action in the middle of the installation process, ending with an error:

Hi ale2x72:

Dell Client Management Service is a service that is shared by multiple Dell apps like Dell / Alienware Update For Windows Universal v5.x, Dell Command | Update v5.x , SupportAssist v4.x, etc. If you were unable to delete the Dell Client Management Service from Windows Services after your SupportAssist uninstall perhaps that service was in use (Status = Running) at the time by one of your other Dell utilities.

A word of caution.  If you follow Dell's instructions for a clean reinstall at Dell SupportAssist for PCs and Tablets Installation Issue (a companion video is posted at Dell SupportAssist Clean Reinstallation) but don't actually reinstall SupportAssist with a fresh copy of SupportAssistInstall.exe when you reach the end of those instructions (which should reinstall Dell Client Manager Service along with other services required by SupportAssist like Dell TechHub, Dell Data Vault Collector, etc.) then you will break other Dell apps that require Dell Client Manager Service.

If you aren't sure what Dell apps you use that require Dell Client Manager Service then don't manually delete it from your Windows Services.

... The suggested app is the Dell/Alienware Update Windows Universal Application v5.4.0 ***, but it fails to install for some reason: first, it tells me there is an older version installed asking me if I want to update, then it rolls back the action in the middle of the installation process, ending with an error ...

If you tried installing Dell / Alienware Update For Windows Universal v5.4.0 after 31-Dec-2024 then see the Dell support article at Alienware Update and Dell Update End of Life (EoL) Announcement that states that Dell is "removing Dell Update and Alienware Update from the Dell Support Site as of December 31, 2024".  My own Dell Update For Windows Universal v5.4.0 app still appears to be running normally on my Inspiron 5584 (see my 02-Jan-2024 comments <here>) but perhaps Dell has done something on their backend servers that now blocks the installation of Dell / Alienware Update v5.4.0.

Restart your computer, enter your unique Service Tag at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/products and download a fresh copy of the Dell-Alienware-Update-Windows-Universal-Application_6F25R_WIN_5.4.0_A00.EXE installer from the Downloads & Drivers tab (assuming that is the Dell / Alienware Update application that matches your Service Tag) and save it your desktop.  Then right-click the .exe installer and choose "Run as Administrator".

If Dell / Alienware Update For Windows Universal v5.4.0 still won't install then go to Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features and uninstall any Dell Update programs  you might find there (e.g., Alienware Update For Windows Universal v5.x, Dell Command | Update v4.x, etc.) and then restart your computer and try running  Dell-Alienware-Update-Windows-Universal-Application_6F25R_WIN_5.4.0_A00.EXE again with Administrator rights. If the installer fails a third time you might find a clue in the errors logged in the Windows Installer log that opens when the installation wizard finishes.
____________________________________________

If you require further assistance please post an image of the Dell programs currently installed on your system at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features.  If the latest SupportAssist v4.6.3 (released 24-Dec-2024) is not installed on your system see employee Dell-Nat M's 24-Dec-2024 announcement in MichaelInParis's Any way to reduce the size of the DTPDB.DB file? for installation instructions.  I can't say how well SupportAssist v4.6.3 will behave on your system (NOTE: The issue that causes database files in the hidden C:\ProgramData\Dell\DTP\DB folder to grow to a large size on some systems apparently won't be fixed until the next SupportAssist release) but a clean reinstall of v4.6.3 should reinstall your Dell Client Management Service and (hopefully) get SupportAssist v4.x running again.

See the images I posted in my 19-Dec-2024 post <above> of the Dell Update For Windows Universal v5.4.0 app and Dell Client Management Service currently installed on my Inspiron 5584.

@lmacri thank you for your prompt reply. I had to remove the service manually because it was not running, and every time I tried to restart it from the Services app, for some reason unknown to me it stopped after a while. In any case, I followed strictly Nat M's indications for a clean reinstall, without success.

Right now, if I try to install SupportAssist from the official link you provided (and following all your instructions), I end up with this:

I also tried restarting multiple times, but the problem persists. I forgot to mention earlier that, despite the Dell update app signals a previous version present, no previously installed Dell/Alienware update apps result in the Installed Apps list:

I also already downloaded (and tried installing) a fresh copy of Dell-Alienware-Update-Windows-Universal-Application_6F25R_WIN_5.4.0_A00.EXE using my service tag (it is the suggested app), with the result I posted in my previous reply (the screenshot).

To summarize:
. the Dell Client Manager service was present but unable to run or keep running even after a SupportAssist uninstall, and I couldn't install the currently available version
. In order to comply with Nat M's indications for a clean install (service should be removed after a SupportAssist uninstall) I removed the service via Command Prompt (thinking that was the reason preventing me from installing SupportAssist)
. Now I cannot install either SupportAssist and/or the Windows Universal application (both abort with unknown errors)

PS: I even checked the Windows logs after a Dell Update failed installation but I could not find/recognize clues (I know something but I'm not THAT expert in Windows or operating systems at that level of detail)

Hi ale2x72:

As I said in my previous post, it's possible that Dell/Alienware Update Windows Universal v5.4.0 won't install now that this app has reached end-of-life, so as of 31-Dec-2024 installing this app as a workaround to restore a missing Dell Client Management Service isn't the best approach.

See the support article Error Code Received During Installation of SupportAssist Version 4.0 or Above. The error code 1603 shown in your first image <above> is a generic error message meaning "A fatal error occurred during installation" that tells us nothing about the root cause of your installation problem.  User wasicca reported that same error code 1603 in their 24-Dec-2024 post in Ruban kumar's dell client management service enable but they never replied back to let us know if a clean reinstall of SupportAssist fixed their error code.
______________________________

Has your Dell service warranty expired, and if not have you opened a support request with Dell customer support so they can look at your installation logs?

What is your Windows operating system [open a run dialog box (Windows key + R) and enter winver to find your version and OS build number] and antivirus? Does your antivirus or any installed utility (e.g., CCleaner Professional, etc.)  have a "performance optimizer" feature that "sleeps" (suspends) background services and/or programs to reduce  CPU usage and increase battery life?

Are there any Dell services currently displayed in your Windows Services (i.e., other than the Fusion Service required to run the "old-style" My Dell v2.2.6.0 UWP app on older Dell computer models), and if so could you post an image?

If you go to Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features what MS .NET (Desktop) Runtimes are currently installed? The Prerequisites section of the SupportAssist v4 release notes <here> state that SupportAssist v4.x requires MS .NET Desktop Runtime version 8.0.x, and the Known Issues section <here> states that SupportAssist may fail to install if an empty .NET folder is present at C:\Program Files\dotnet\shared\Microsoft.WindowsDesktop.App after the removal of a previous version.  From my Win 10 machine, which currently has that MS .NET Desktop Runtime v8.0.x installed:

NOTE 1: Under normal circumstances the MS .NET Desktop Runtime v8.0.x should be installed by the current SupportAssistInstaller.exe installer if this Runtime is missing from your system

NOTE 2: Post back if you have any other MS .NET (Desktop) Runtimes are installed before doing any cleanup.  These Runtimes are required for a variety of programs (for example, I uninstalled SupportAssist from my Inspiron 5584 but my own MS .NET Desktop Runtime v8.0.x is still required for a third-party utility called QuickInstaller) and you could damage other software by removing other MS .NET (Desktop) Runtimes.

Hi ale2x72:

That suggests there are other remnants of earlier SUpportAssist installations in a location other than your Windows Services (e.g., in a Windows registry key, in C:/ Program Files/Dell/SupportAssist or the hidden C:/Program Data/SupportAssist, etc.).

Run Microsoft's Program Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter to see if it can detect and remove the last remnants of SupportAssist and/or Dell Update off your system as instructed in Method V - Run the Microsoft Install/Uninstall Troubleshooter of the Dell support article How To Remove Applications, Programs, and Updates in Windows 11, and Windows 10.

If that doesn't work you can also use the free 30-day trial of Revo Uninstaller Pro to try a forced uninstall.

The support article Error Code Received During Installation of SupportAssist Version 4.0 or Above states that error code 1612 means "The installation source for this product is not available."  Whenever you perform a clean reinstall of SupportAssist make sure you always download a fresh copy of the latest version of SupportAssistInstaller.exe from https://downloads.dell.com/serviceability/catalog/SupportAssistInstaller.exe as instructed in the clean reinstall instructions and then right-click the .exe installer and choose "Run as Administrator".

@lmacri thank you again for your fast and thorough reply, I finally found the culprit and moved one step forward in solving my issue.

The critical clue was the Windows log error 1714 (The older version of Dell SupportAssist cannot be removed). I know the system error 1612 is a very generic one, but the other code put me in the right direction: I had uninstalled all previous versions of SupportAssist, so the cause was probably some dirty registry keys. I scanned the registry for "SupportAssist" and deleted all folders and keys (exporting them before deleting to eventually restore them in case I needed to).

After "cleaning" the registry I was able to install the latest SupportAssist version and regularly check for updates right away. In the Windows Services, all required Dell services show up correctly:

The issue is not completely solved though, because now I am in the same situation mentioned here: https://www.dell.com/community/en/conversations/inspiron/dell-client-management-refuses-to-start-error-1053/647f9da5f4ccf8a8de2071ef?commentId=647f9daef4ccf8a8de219187

Trying to run Software Update check from SupportAssist a second time results in an error, and, after looking at Windows Services, the cause is the Dell Client Management Service refusing to start (just the problem described in the discussion linked above). Following the steps mentioned in the video posted as a solution there (deleting the C:\ProgramData\Dell\UpdateService\Clients folder and then restarting the service) worked for now, I still have to test what happens after a restart, but I have the feeling I'll have to repeat those steps again (I'll perform this test later on, I have restarted my PC enough times in these past two days...).

Coming to your other questions: I am running Windows 11 Home 23H2 (OS Build 22631.4602), I have the .NET Desktop 8.0.11 Runtime installed, and my Dell warranty has expired. As an antivirus, I have BitDefender (free version), but I have not found any settings about system optimization in its menu (I'll search further in the next days).

Sadly, my feelings were correct. I restarted my laptop and the Dell Client Management Service refuses to run (error 1053). Looking at the thread linked in my previous reply (2 years old, last reply one year ago) and searching the community, it seems that, to this day, there is no stable solution to this issue, and the actual cause has not been identified.
