Disable Dell Support Assistant System Repair for Organisation

Hello,

We have an issue that keeps popping up. C:\ space is completely filled by Support Assist System Repair.

Recommended Settings are selected, which should use around 15GB of disk space, however, it is often going to 100GB+

I have seen that this was suppose to have been fixed in version 5.5. We are mostly using version 3. So the solution would be to update Support Assist. However, we are having this issue across the orignisation and I would just like to disable the System Repair backups as it is not required.

Can a command or registry change be deployed to all computers?

Hi PaulEsty1933:

Does that mean your organization uses SupportAssist for Business?  If so, there is a separate SupportAssist Enterprise board in this forum where you can post your question, and you can find an Administrator Guide and other useful documents for the Business edition at https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-ca/product-support/product/supportassist-business-pcs/docs.

This board is intended for questions about SupportAssist for Home PCs.

No, the machines just have the standard version of the software installed.

Hi PaulEsty1993:

Am I correct that these Dell computers are clients on a local area network that are managed centrally by a systems administrator? How many client computers are we talking about, and are any of these computers connecting to your LAN from a remote location where they can't be easily accessed? Your original question implies that it is not possible (or at least inconvenient) to turn off System Repair or uninstall Dell SupportAssist Remediation (also known as SupportAssist OS Recovery or System Repair) from each computer individually, and that you are looking for a quick solution that can be applied remotely to all machines by your systems administrator. If so, I have no idea how to do this, so hopefully someone else following this thread will jump in to explain if this is possible. In a normal business environment I believe you would be using SupportAssist for Business and then managing all SupportAssist settings remotely from the TechDirect portal as described <here> in the SupportAssist for Business PCs with Windows OS Deployment Guide.

I don't know what is or isn't practical in your organization so apologies in advance if some of the following comments aren't useful to you.

Dell SupportAssist Remediation creates a new system repair point (system snapshot) about 30 min after each boot-up and saves it in a hidden, protected folder at C:\ProgramData\Dell\SARemediation\SystemRepair\ folder.  You are correct that older versions of SupportAssist were known to have a bug where the size of that hidden folder could grow beyond the maximum 12-15 GB of allocated disk space because older system repair points were not being purged as new ones were created. See SteveTree's Reduce Disk Space Used by SARemediation that notes that this extra disk space can be recovered by disabling System Repair in either the SupportAssist settings at Options (gear icon) | Settings | System Repair or in the SupportAssist OS Recovery settings manager (Control Panel | System and Security | SupportAssist OS Recovery | Settings) as shown below.

In your case it sounds like your don't want to use the SupportAssist OS Recovery environment described <here> at all and already have an alternate system in place for emergency recovery (I use Macrium Reflect Free imaging software on my home PC). In that case it would make more sense to disable the Dell SupportAssist Remediation service as shown below so that Dell SupportAssist Remediation can't launch at boot-up or simply uninstall Dell SupportAssist Remediation from Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features. Once Dell SupportAssist Remediation is uninstalled SupportAssist will likely offer it again as an optional ~ 350 MB update called SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools. I'm not sure, however, if the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools could be inadvertently reinstalled again if you allow SupportAssist to run automatic background scan for available updates [i.e., if Options (gear icon) | Settings | Automate Scans and Optimizations | Scan Your System and Drivers is enabled].

Note that I currently have Dell SupportAssist v3.11.4.29 and Dell SupportAssist Remediation (a.k.a. SupportAssist OS Recovery) v5.5.4.16189 installed on my Inspiron 5584 but I normally have three services - Dell SupportAssist, Dell SupportAssist Remediation, and Dell TechHub - disabled so that both these programs cannot automatically launch at boot-up on my system.
