Dell Support Assist for Non-Admin Users
Hi,
I have a new Inspiron 5579. When a non-admin user logs in they get a pop-up window asking for an administrator login. Even when I put in admin credentials I still get another pop-up that says a service has failed to start.
This does not happen when an Admin user logs in to the laptop.
I have traced this to the Dell Support Assist Agent service; it won't start up for a non-Admin user.
How can I get this to work for a non-Admin user? Should I disable the Support Assist Agent and call it a day?
Edit: Windows 10 Version 1709, build 16299.251.

I solved the problem by logging into the PC as an Admin and then stopping the Support Assist service and setting the startup to manual. It's still available if I need it but no longer fails when a non-admin user logs in.

Hi @Tom Kemp and All,
Thank you all for your feedback. SupportAssist hotfix 2.2.2.7 was released to address issue with UAC prompts in non-admin user sessions. Please update SupportAssist to latest version 2.2.2.7 to resolve this issue.
SupportAssist update availability can also be verified by navigating to "Settings" at top right of the SupportAssist home screen. "Settings > About SupportAssist > Check for updates"
SupportAssist latest and current version is available for download here
Thanks,
Dell - Kumar

Maybe disabling Support Assist from loading at every startup would prevent this. Just use it when needed. It can cause problems running all the time. Open Task Manager, More Details, Startup tab and disable it.

It's not showing in startup tab for me and i answered no to entering admin credentials and now all the user gets is a black screen with a cursor.

Dell "broke" SupportAssist 2.0 sometime in 2018. The same installer used in Oct-December 2017 pulled down a 2.0.x agent. When one installs it (or reinstalls it) now, it automatically downloads the latest agent which is a 2.1.x version. If you are logging onto the system with a non-admin (IT best practices for "daily use"), you will receive one or more of the following errors -- every time you login:
1. SupportAsssistAgent crash
2. Koala CLI crash
3. Failure to load a certificate.
Log out/log in the same system with an "administrator" account, no problems. Log out/back in with the non-admin and it will crash 100% of the time.
I have had a case with the Dell REC (Resolution "Expert" Center) for over two months and Dell's "devs" claim they can't even reproduce the problem -- even with VERY detailed instructions.

I'll bet they can reproduce, at the very least, the prompt for administrator credentials now. I have 5 new Dell computers, all running Windows 10 Pro, all prompt when you log into non-admin accounts. I've seen the crash, too. Going to do as previously suggested...set the service to manual start. On the downside, if my assumption is correct, that means these PCs won't automatically be checking for updates.

Tom,
I bought this XPS for my wife. She then wanted something else. I thought I had done everything to remove her information from the computer when I removed her USER and information.
Now, I have not ability to do anything without her userid because of "SupportAssist". What are my options???

Thank you for fixing it last year. It's apparently broken again, as we've had many users reporting their computers keep requesting admin credentials for a Dell app.

We're still having this issue. Dell SupportAssist is on Version 3.2.2 which is far past the update that supposedly fixes this. Am I going to have to make a GPO to disable the "Dell SupportAssist" service? That's not an acceptable solution BTW.
Edit: I just upgraded to version 3.3.3 but I dont know if that helped.

I have a workaround.
When I get new Windows 10 machines I go into Settings -> Apps -> and remove Dell Support Assist. This removes it from the Dell list on the Start Menu.
There's still an icon under "Support Assist" (under the S's on the Start Menu) that seems to re-install Support Assist when you click on it.
So I leave Dell Support Assist uninstalled and if I ever need it - which I haven't - I'll just click on the "Support Assist" shortcut. I use the Dell Command Update installed on the machine to apply firmware updates.
Another reason I uninstalled Dell Support Assist app is in the Resource Monitor I saw it taking some 500 megabytes of memory, which is a lot to give up on an 8 GB machine.
