Dell Command Updates not showing latest BIOS updates

There are BIOS updates available on the Dell site,

e.g.

https://www.dell.com/support/product-details/en-uk/product/latitude-15-5521-laptop/drivers.

These updates are however not appearing on the (latest) Dell Command Update program on the same laptop. Why is there this discrepancy that Dell Command Update does not have the latest BIOS updates?

Hi JohnHarding1:

What is your Windows operating system [open a run dialog box (Windows key + R) and enter winver to find the version and OS build number] and current BIOS version *** [open a Run dialog box, enter msinfo32 to open your System Information panel, and look for the “BIOS Version/Date” field]?  Ween you post back also confirm that you have a Dell Latitude 5521 that you manage yourself (i.e., your computer is not used in a business environment where updates are managed remotely by an IT department).

Just an FYI that I use Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.4.0 on my Inspiron 5584 and I typically have to wait about 6 to 8 days before this utility detects updates posted on my online Inspiron 5584 support page.  I have no idea what causes this lag, but I suspect Dell monitors telemetry from early adopters who update using .exe installers downloaded from their online support page and then waits to see if the new update displays any buggy behaviour before it is pushed out via SupportAssist v4.x or one of their Dell Update v5.x utilities.

That being said, it looks like the current Dell Precision 3561 and Latitude 5521 System BIOS v1.34.0 *** was posted online on 17-Dec-2024, which seems like an exceptionally long delay if you have a Dell Latitude 5521.  If your Dell service warranty has not expired I'd suggest you click the blue "Get Help Now" button in the bottom right corner of every forum page and to start a live chat with a Dell service rep (assuming you can get past their AI chat bot and connect to a real person).  NOTE: If your service warranty has expired the chat bot will not connect you to a live Dell service rep.

Also note that Dell ended support for most editions of Dell Update v5.x on 31-Dec-2024 [see the support article at Alienware Update and Dell Update End of Life (EoL) Announcement]. However, I don't think this EOL includes the "classic" Dell Command | Update v5.x or Dell Command | Update for Windows Universal v5.x UWP apps that are compatible with many higher-end Latitude, Optiplex, Precision and XPS models typically used in a business environment (although I might be wrong about that).  See my 09-May-2024 topic Support for Dell Update / Alienware Update Ending December 2024 for more information.

*** ASIDE: I would strongly advise that you do NOT allow Windows Update or a Dell utility like SupportAssist v4.x or Dell Command | Update for Windows Universal v5.x to update your BIOS, since any glitch during the update process could leave your system unbootable. If you have SupportAssist v4.x installed I would also advise you disable automatic updates (see the instructions <here> in the SupportAssist v4.0 User Guide) to prevent an unexpected BIOS update - if you run update checks manually from the  Home tab of SupportAssist v4.x this will allow you to review the list of available updates and decline any BIOS update before it starts to download.

When Dell releases a critical BIOS update that as been certified for my Inspiron 5584 I normally save the .exe installer recommended on the Drivers & Downloads tab of my Inspiron 5584 support page to my desktop, close all my open programs, and then right-click the .exe file and choose "Run as Administrator".  However, the safer method is to flash your BIOS from a removable USB stick.

We have a large number of computers (80+) that all are doing the same thing.  Not only does it not show the BIOS update, but it no longer shows any updates for any of the computers.

I should add, these are all Optiplex computers, of various models at different locations, with different ISP's and routers.  The Dell command update app has also been upgraded to 5.4.1.  I have tried from 5.4, and 5.3 all with the same results.  This started around mid-January.  There are no errors when running the update.  It just shows no updates to install after checking for updates.  I can manually download and install the updates just fine.  I have also tried using Dell Support Assist as well with the same results.

We have been experiencing this we  a lot of update, especially this month. I just had to manually install a graphics driver and BIOS on remote machines because they do not show in DCU. I am not sure what is going on, but Dell is seriously dropping the ball here.
