BSOD issues after Windows Updates

Hi,

I have been facing BSOD issues since I did my last windows updates. It crashes without any apparent reasons every 10-30 mins.  BSOD screen just last less than 3 seconds, when it appears, sometimes, it doesn't even show up.

I have installed the last BIOS : Inspiron_Vostro_5415_5515_1.25.1 but it has not changed a thing.

I looked inside the EventLog in order to find reasons of crashes :

I have tried to removed Dell SupportAssit,

but I got this :

I founs some Tutorials to resolve this kind of errors, but none resolved the issue.

Can you help me to remove this tool ?

Hi ygil:

What is your Dell computer model and Windows operating system [if Win 10 or Win 11 please include the version and OS build number - open a Run dialog box (Windows key + R) and enter winver]?  If you go to Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features and search for "Dell" what are the full names and version numbers of all your installed Dell programs?

Please note that the application errors logged in your Event Viewer for DellSupportAssistRemediationService.exe are associated with Dell SupportAssist Remediation v5.5.x (also known as Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery or System Repair) and not the SupportAssist v4.x program itself. These application errors, while concerning, may not be the cause of your BSODs ***. If you check your Windows Reliability Monitor are there other errors logged when your BSODs occur?

NOTE:  If you cannot uninstall SupportAssist v4.6.3 (or some other Dell program like Dell SupportAssist Remediation v5.5.13) from Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features see employee DELL-Nat M's 08-Jul-2024 instructions <here> for using Microsoft's Program Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter tool.

As a first troubleshooting step I'd suggest you scan your Windows system files just in case they were damaged during your last Windows Update (i.e., when your BSODs started).  My 29-Dec-2024 post in PeterMartinez's SupportAssist Reports Wrong Service Tag Code includes instructions on how to run DISM and System File Checker (SFC) scans that might be able to repair any damaged or missing Windows system files.

I would also check your Windows Update history to see if your last Windows Update installed any "generic" hardware driver updates for your graphics card, etc. that might be incompatible with your Dell BIOS.  NOTE: For Win 10, go to Settings | Update & Security | Windows Update | View Update History and look under "Other Updates".

*** For analysis of your BSOD mini-dump and/or full dump files:

My 14-Oct-2020 post in LawrenceJohnston's My Vista Machine Frequently Gets the Blue Screen of Death - Help in the MS Answers forum includes instructions for using free utilities like Nirsoft's BlueScreenView and Resplendence's Who Crashed to interpret and summarize the Bug Check (BC) codes in Windows mini-dump files.  These utilities only list basic details (filename, product name, file description, and file version) of the suspected driver / module that was loaded in the crash stack at the time of the crash so they aren't as accurate as a detailed Windows Debugger (WinDbg) analysis of your full dump files, but if DellSupportAssistRemediationService.exe is the actual cause of your BSODs it should be listed somewhere in the crash stack.

If you post your full dump files in BleepingComputer's free Windows Crashes and Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Help and Support board one of the trained volunteers will run an analysis with Windows Debugger (WinDbg) for you. Posting guidelines are pinned <here> at the top of that BleepingComputer board and explain what information you should include in your first post.

Hi ygil:

Thanks for that additional information.

Has your Dell service warranty expired, and do you have the latest Dell Inspiron 5515 System BIOS v1.25.1 recommended for your computer model?  If you aren't sure open a Run dialog box (Windows key + R), enter msinfo32 to open your System Information panel, and look for the “BIOS Version/Date” field.  NOTE: Do NOT update your BIOS of you have an older BIOS version, at least for now.

I'm guessing most of your problems started when you updated your OS to Win 11 v24H2 on 31-Jan-2024, which as multiple known issues (see https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/release-health/status-windows-11-24h2) and in my opinion should never have gone in to wide release until most of these bugs were fixed. The good news is that your DISM and SFC scans didn't detect any obvious problems with your system files.  Have you run a manual Windows Update since 31-Jan-2024 to ensure your system is fully patched?

It looks like every Dell program on your computer is outdated or discontinued.  For example, the latest version of Dell SupportAssist is v4.6.3 released on 24-Dec-2024 (you have a very old v3.14.0).  If I go to the Inspiron 5515 support page at https://www.dell.com/support/product-details/en-us/product/inspiron-15-5515-laptop/drivers and choose Windows 11 as the OS it recommends Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery Plugin for Dell Update v5.5.13.1 released 31-Jan-2025 (you have v5.5.5.16206) and Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.4.0 released 31-Jul-2024 (you have v5.1.0).  I can't see what version of the My Dell app you have, but most newer versions have a built-in power manager (see the images of MyDell v2.2.6.0 I posted <here> on 05-Oct-2024) so I suspect your obsolete Dell Power Manager Service v3.9.0 released 20-May-2021 needs to be uninstalled, along with the discontinued Dell Mobile Connect app per the announcement at Dell Mobile Connect and Alienware Mobile Connect End of Service Announcement.

HINT:  To see what Dell software and hardware driver versions are recommend for your system go to the Inspiron 5515 support page at https://www.dell.com/support/product-details/en-us/product/inspiron-15-5515-laptop/drivers, choose Select Drivers, and click the "This Device" tab as shown below and enter your unique Service Tag.  This should display a filtered list of Dell software and hardware drivers that match your system components .  NOTE: This filtered list is a list of compatible software and drivers for your system but some may already be installed and others like Dell SmartByte may be unnecessary.

I'd suggest you uninstall all the outdated and obsolete Dell software I mentioned above, as well as the Dell SupportAssist Remediation v5.5.6.18729 (which I believe is outdated as well) that is throwing constant errors in your Event Viewer, and monitor your system for a few days to see if your BSODs stop after these programs are removed.  I no longer have any SupportAssist-related programs on my Inspiron 5584 (they were too buggy and used too much RAM and CPU), but when I needed to uninstall these programs I would use Revo Uninstaller Free in Aggressive Mode to ensure I removed any stray registry entries and/or disk files that are often left behind during a "normal" uninstall from Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features. Post back if your old SupportAssist v3.14.0 (or any other Dell software) continues to throw an error when you try to uninstall.

After having a lot of BSOD just after the system updates.. i have searched the net, and found a post date from 2022 telling that it has the same issue that has been resolved by updating the bios.

Then i did to the last one, and I thought it resolved the issue, but in fact i was just having no bsod for the rest of my office day.. but they came back the next day...

here is msinfo :

afterwards I have checked the last driver to be update on dell site.

which says that my inspiration support has been expired since 5 dec 2022

i have wanted to update the dell supportAssist, but when i install it, the first window is displayed with"we are getting things ready for you" with an endless waiting circle icon... reason why i have tried to uninstall first, which i couldn't.. this is the exact spot where i am...

I am going to try to uninstall the dell applications as you mentioned.

I keep you posted.

and i have installed the last update...

I you have a new full version of SupportAssist, in order either to remove this one, or to update with the latest one.. because the installer which download the package from the net, is failing waiting endlessly.

Have a great time

Hi ygil:

If you cannot uninstall the old SupportAssist v3.14.0.19 from Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features (NOT Settings | Apps) see employee DELL-Nat M's 08-Jul-2024 suggestion <here> for using Microsoft's Program Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter tool.  Is that Microsoft tool able to find and uninstall SupportAssist?

Detailed instructions for using Microsoft's Program Install and Uninstall Troubleshooter tool are posted in the section titled "Method 5: Run the Microsoft Install or Uninstall Troubleshooter" of the Dell support article How To Remove Applications, Programs, and Updates in Windows 11, and Windows 10

If that Microsoft tool doesn't work I would try the free 30-day trial of Revo Uninstaller Pro.  The Pro version of Revo Uninstaller has a feature called Forced Uninstall.  See the Revo tutorial How to Use Forced Uninstall , which explains how to use this feature "when a program’s built-in uninstaller is missing or isn’t functioning properly, allowing removal of programs that lack a built-in uninstaller".

hello,

After uninstalling all application (b.. but it ut support assist), i noticed that I was still having some dell services running. then I have stop them all, and remove all services.  I reboot, and some of them came back.

I did the same procedure again, and i noticed that some of the application binaries were still located on \program files\Dell... then i renamed the dell folder and rebooted...

I got then rid of dell services.

In you procedure, in order to remove support assist, i had to use revo.  But it couldn't force remove without cleaning some (a lot) of registry entries, and some binaries.

I did it blindly, let it do the work, and reboot..

Very strange,  dell support assist was still listed in the program files.

I search by myself any entries in the registry referencing dell.. and remove what i found.

reboot and search again...

i think now my windows is clean from any dell application.

I check when i have to use my laptop longer, if it is stable.

thank you for your help.

In case it is stable, would you recommend, really, some of dell applications to be reinstall ?

Hi ygil:

Uncertified or outdated graphics drivers are the most common cause of BSODs.  While you're waiting to see if your system is stable I'd suggest you check to make sure you are using the graphics driver(s) recommended on your Inspiron 5515 support page.  See my hint <above> about entering your unique Service Tag on the This Device tab at https://www.dell.com/support/product-details/en-us/product/inspiron-15-5515-laptop/drivers to find the latest drivers that match your system components and are certified for your Dell Inspiron 5515 System BIOS.

You can check the make / model and current graphics driver version for each of your graphics devices in the Display Adapters section of Device Manager.  My Inspiron 5584 does not have a discrete graphics card (e.g., like NVIDIA GeForce, AMD Radeon, etc.) so it uses the on-board Intel UHD Graphics 620 GPU on my motherboard.

Hi ygil:

I would avoid reinstalling SupportAssist v4.x until the next release, even if you are sure your BSODs are fixed.   Many users have reported that same "We're getting things ready for you" message while trying to install recent versions of SupportAssist v4.6.x (see Aayushman's 02-Mar-2024 topic Installation issue of the Dell SupportAssist software) and my 02-Jan-2025 post in WjSturgis' Support Assist Will Not Run describes a major DTP bug in the current SupportAssist v4.6.3 that still needs to be fixed.

NOTE: The latest installer for Dell SupportAssist v4.x (SupportAssistInstaller.exe) is available at https://downloads.dell.com/serviceability/catalog/SupportAssistInstaller.exe.

_________________________________________

As I said before, I uninstalled all SupportAssist-related programs from my Inspiron 5584 after my service warranty expired - they were too buggy, consumed too much RAM and CPU, and the "system optimization" scans in SupportAssist (Clean Files / Tune Performance / Optimize Network) were too aggressive and had the potential to do more harm than good.  For example, see my 12-Jul-2021 posts in ex-jedi's Prevent Automatic Recycle Bin Emptying about the over-aggressive registry cleaner included with the Tune Performance scan (now called Boost Performance in SupportAssist v4.x).

When I still used SupportAssist v.3.x I would turn off all automatic background scanning at Settings | Scans and Optimizations (see the SupportAssist v4 User Guide <here>) and would only run "Update Software" and "Scan Hardware" tasks manually when needed from the Home tab of SupportAssist to prevent any unexpected updates or unwanted changes to my system.

_________________________________________

The only Dell software I currently have on my Inspiron 5584 are Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.4.0, My Dell v2.2.6.0 (the "legacy" UWP app for older Dell computer models that requires Fusion Service v2.2.14.0) and an old Dell CinemaColor v2.4.78.0 UWP app (which I don't use and should probably uninstall).

Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.4.0 app reached end of support on 31-Dc-2024 (see Alienware Update and Dell Update End of Life (EoL) Announcement), but for now it still seems to run correctly - see my 02-Jan-2025 feedback <here>.  Like SupportAssist and many other Dell utilities, Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.x uses the Dell Client Management Service.

If I need to run a Dell hardware diagnostic I run the F12 ePSA (enhanced Pre-boot System Assessment) on-board hardware diagnostics from my Dell BIOS as instructed in the support article How to Run Dell Preboot Diagnostics and Hardware Tests on Your Dell Computer (see the companion video Performing ePSA Diagnostics).

I replaced Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery v5.5.x (also called Dell Remediation or System Repair) with Macrium Reflect Free v8 disk imaging software.  Macrium Reflect Free v8 reached end of support in January 2024 but continues to function normally - see TechRepublic's Sept 2024 Top 5 Free & Reliable Hard Disk Drive Cloning Software for other suggestions. I now use Macrium Reflect Free to create emergency media (e.g., a bootable removable USB stick), and I save the occasional full disk image on an external USB backup drive in case I ever have perform a emergency recovery of my Windows OS and want to quickly re-image my entire hard drive to an earlier date. As an added precaution I've enabled Windows System Restore (disabled by default in Win 10 and Win 11) as instructed in the Windows Central article How to Use System Restore on Windows 11 so I always have a recent Windows restore point I can use to roll back my Windows OS.

Hello,

Sorry to come back with such a delay.  I had just had only  days to work with my laptop.

I have installed first the graphic driver, but it happens without notification of anything and without asking to reboot, except the message that it is installed.  afterwards I check if it was listed in the "add /remove programs", but no, it wasn't.

Anyway.. I had one BSOD each day I work with it... it is reduced a lot, and now i can work with that.. but it seems still not to have stable system.

thx for your help.

Hello,

Jus to give you updates, I was thinking about to reinstall a clean OS, and I have seen that a new cumulative updates was available.  I have installed it.. and no BSOD anymore, but it was just a short hope? Indeed no BSOD in the morning, but 5 in the afternoon...

Then I decided for the reinstall, during that Week -end.. Remove All dell applications.. and since then , I had no BSOD anymore.

Thank you for your effort, I am still frustrated not to have discovered and understood what was going on.

best regards

Hi ygil:

When you reinstalled SupportAssist this past week after your Win 11 v24H2 OS update did you download a fresh copy of SupportAssistInstaller.exe from https://downloads.dell.com/serviceability/catalog/SupportAssistInstaller.exe? The latest v4.8.1.28478 installer should install a new SupportAssist v4.8.1.27758.  If you reinstalled multiple Dell programs at the same time this past week it will be difficult to isolate exactly which Dell program, if any, is the root cause of your BSODs. The application errors logged in your Event Viewer that you showed in your original post <here> actually point to a problem with Dell SupportAssist OS Recovery  v5.5.x (also known as  Dell SupportAssist Remediation or System Repair) and not SupportAssist v4.x.

If updating to the new SupportAssist v4.8.1.27758 doesn't solve your BSODs then post your full dump files in BleepingComputer's free Windows Crashes and Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Help and Support board as I suggested in my 07-Feb-2025 post <above>. A proper analysis of your dump files with Windows Debugger (WinDbg) is the best way to determine the root cause of your BSODs.

You might also be interested in reading peterb's 28-Feb-2025 Click-to-run update crashes Windows! in the AskWoody forum. An analysis of their full dump files with WinDbg showed it was their Norton 360 antivirus that was the root cause of the BSODs on their Dell Precision 3431 desktop.

Keep in mind that you should be able to install and run the Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.4.0 app (Dell-Update-Windows-Universal-Application_HG1TN_WIN_5.4.0_A00.EXE, released 31-Jul-2024) listed on your Inspiron 5515 support page at https://www.dell.com/support/product-details/en-ca/product/inspiron-15-5515-laptop/drivers to check for available Dell software and driver updates if the new SupportAssist v4.8.1.27758 causes problems on your Win 11 v24H2 system.
