Any Problems Installing SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.5.1.16141?

Has anyone successfully installed SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.5.1.16141?

I ran manual update checks with both SupportAssist and Dell Update today and both detected SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.5.1.16141 as a critical update. Note that I've disabled automatic updates and optimization scans in SupportAssist at Options (gear icon) | Settings | Automate Scans and Optimizations | Scan Your System and Drivers.

However, something looks odd about this update.  The release date is displayed as 01-Jul-2022 (i.e., five months in the future), and when I click the diagonal arrow in Dell Update to find more information the Dell support site says this update is no longer available (which suggests it might have been pulled from the Dell update servers).

I'm hesitant to try the installation since the last time something like this happened SupportAssist got stuck in a repeating loop of failed SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools updates. I currently have SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools (a.k.a. Dell SupportAssist Remediation) v5.5.0.16046, and here are my other Dell program versions:

Yes, I have been having issues with this update as well. Simply put: DO NOT UPDATE IT. When I did so, it failed to install completely, caused my system to crash with a BSoD, and said my hard drive was no longer available, causing me to have to do a clean installation of Windows. I've notified Dell Support about the problem, but the update is still available for download.

As best as I can tell, it's a update that was pulled by Dell but is still available to download for whatever reason. SupportAssist may tell you it's fine and may ping you to update every once in a while, but it's incomplete and will seriously mess up your system if you try installing. Don't make my mistake XD

Hi Niklas E:

Thanks for your warning. I'll delay installing the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.5.1.16141 and will monitor this board to see if other users experience similar issues. I'm beginning to wonder now if at least some of the problems recently reported in SupportAssist PC-Doctor Module, 100% CPU and RAM Usage! are related (i.e., if SupportAssist is repeatedly failing to download and/or install the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.5.1.16141 update and hogging system resources in the process).

There have been several bugs in recent versions of the SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools (see my 28-Jul-2021 post in Desmodus1984's Inspiron 5570 - SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools Downloads But Not Installing for a few examples) and I currently have SupportAssist OS Recovery v5.5.0.16046 disabled on my Inspiron 5584. Specifically, I turned off System Repair in my SupportAssist settings at Options (gear icon) | Settings | System Repair as shown below and then disabled my Dell SupportAssist Remediation service at Start | Windows Administrative Tools | Services to ensure the service can't start at boot-up.

I now use Macrium Reflect Free v8 disk imaging software to create bootable media and full disk images for emergency recovery. If Dell isn't going to start posting release notes for SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools (a.k.a. Dell SupportAssist Remediation) and being more transparent about known issues then perhaps it's time for me to permanently remove this Dell software.

I was having the same issues.

The driver is now reporting an issue date of 1/7/2022

As of 2/21/2022, the update has installed without issue.

I have permanently uninstalled SupportAssist from my two Dell computers.  I do use Dell Update and it has been bugging me for the last few days about this update, which I am ignoring.  If it continues to hound me, Dell Update will be history too on both of my computers and I will do manual checks at the Dell website, where yesterday day I found a BIOS update for my XPS 8930 that Dell Update had missed so far.

I use Macrium Reflect too on a weekly basis.  SupportAssist is just too prone to bugs.  All my BIOS updates are done via the Flash BIOS boot option.  I don't want to take any unnecessary chances with my BIOS.

Have a great day.

Regards,
-Phil

Hi garioch7:

I find that updates posted on the support site <here> for my Inspiron 5584 can take anywhere from a few days to more than a week before they are detected by SupportAssist or Dell Update. Employee DELL-Chris M confirmed <here> on 03-Oct-2021 that this is "expected" behaviour.

Does the blue "Check for Updates" button still work on the support page <here> for your XPS 8930 since you uninstalled SupportAssist? If I uninstall SupportAssist [or simply disable the SupportAssist privacy setting at Option (gear icon) | Settings | Privacy | I Authorize Dell to Collect My Service Tag and System Usage Details Mentioned Above] I see a prompt asking me to install SupportAssist and I am unable to use that "Check for Updates" button to look for updates that match my unique Service Tag / hardware configuration.

Just FYI, I still have SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools (a.k.a. Dell SupportAssist Remediation) v5.5.0.16046 and continue to decline the update to v5.5.1.16141.

@lmacri

The "automatic check for updates" is not available to me now that SupportAssist is exterminated, but I am happy to enter my Service Tag.  My computer is correctly identified (XPS 8930).

Have a great day.

-Phil

Hi Saheel002:

Please let us know your Windows operating system [if Win 10 or Win 11 include the edition (Home or Pro), version and build shown at Settings | System | About | Windows Specifications] and whether you have installed the Dell G3 3500 and G5 5500 System BIOS v1.18.0 (released 08-Aug-2022) recommended <here> on the support page for the Dell G3 15 3500. To find your current BIOS version open a Run dialog box, enter msinfo32 to open your System Information panel and look for the “BIOS Version/Date” field.  When you go to Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features what the current version of Dell SupportAssist Remediation (also known as SupportAssist OS Recovery) listed there?  From my Inspiron 5584:

Win 10 Pro v21H2 Control Panel Dell Programs Installed 14 Aug 2022.png

This thread was started back in Feb 2022 and discussed a problem with installation of SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.5.1.16141. Are you certain that your stop code error appeared during installation of the latest SupportAssist OS Recovery Tools v5.5.3.16171 (released in July 2022), and if so were you using a utility like SupportAssist or Dell Update to install this update?  Just note that some users have reported similar stop codes while they were trying to install the latest SupportAssist v3.4.9.11 (released 23-Jun-2022) on their system - for example, see crimsom's image in 17 R5, Dell SupportAssist x64 v3.11.2.143 Installation Failed of a BAD_POOL_CALLER stop code they received while trying to install a recent SupportAssist update on their Alienware 17 R5.

Can you find an event that was logged in your Windows Event Viewer about the same time this stop code occurred that might have some additional information about your stop code (e.g., the name of the faulty driver)? The Microsoft support article Troubleshoot Blue Screen Errors might help you locate additional information about your stop code if you aren't sure where to look in Event Viewer. I've also posted instructions in Brad1779's Inspiron 5570 Blue Screen on how to use a free utility called BlueScreenView that will analyze the Bug Check (BC) codes of any Windows mini-dump files that might have been created during your blue screen.

I would personally think twice before installing the SupportAssist OS Recovery tools. I'd recommend a backup of at least your important data before installing it. In my multiple installation attempts, including the most recent version 5.5.5.16457 on Windows 10 Pro, the installation has either crashed or hung. I gave it 10 minutes on the most recent attempt but it simply reported "Installing updates 1 of 1..." with the progress bar showing 100%. Given that this tool presumably modifies disk partitions, it's not exactly inspiring confidence. The SupportAssist tool itself is also flaky, and has been for years, often requiring uninstall/reinstall to get past its opening welcome banner. Thumbs down for these tools.
