2 Dell SupportAssist apps

Inspiron 3020 Small Desktop

Inspiron 3020 Small Desktop

Since about a year, I have 2 Dell SupportAssist apps listed on the List of Installed Apps on my computer. It did not cause any issues as far as I can tell, but I finally uninstalled both apps, restarted my computer, and reinstalled using the download from the Dell website.

After reinstallation, I have 2 Dell SupportAssist apps !!

What's wrong?

Hi Valinger:

What is your Windows OS?  To find the version and OS build number open a run dialog box (Windows key + R) and enter winver.

What version of SupportAssist is listed at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features?

If you were looking in Settings | Apps  it is normal to find two separate components for SupportAssist v4.x that have different names and version numbers.  I'm not certain about SupportAssist v4.x, but for the previous SupportAssist v3.x those components were the main ~ 300 MB Dell SupportAssist application (which should match the version number shown at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features) and a small "helper" Appx module (Windows Application Package) named "SupportAssist" that contains files and credentials required to install and run the main application.  Here's an old image I captured back in March 2023 on my Win 10 machine for SupportAssist v3.x :

NOTE: Some other Dell Universal Windows Platform (UWP) applications like Dell Update for Windows Universal v5.x will also list two components after installation  - the main application and a small "helper" Appx module - at Settings | Apps.

See rinconman85's 15-Aug-2021 What is the Current Version of Support Assist for more information. That topic is a bit old but it includes Dell employee NikhilKiroula's reply <here> about why it's normal for SupportAssist to have two components with different version numbers listed at Settings | Apps.

Hi Valinger:

I've asked a few other users who have SupportAssist v4.1.0 on their system to look at your image and let us know if what you're seeing at Settings | Apps | Installed Apps is "normal".

Unfortunately, many users who installed v4.1.0 have already downgraded back to the previous v4.8.2 because of bugs like the one described in ner0's 07-Oct 2025 Latest SupportAssist v4.10.1 - We can't reach the internet right now.

Hi Valinger:

It's very rare for any of the Dell employees to respond in a forum topic these days.  If the service warranty for your Dell computer has not expired yet you can contact Dell customer support directly by clicking the blue Get Help Now button located in the bottom-right corner of each page of this forum to start a Live Chat and ask them for assistance. After you type in a brief summary of your problem the automated Dell-Cares chat bot will ask for your email address and the unique Service Tag of your Dell computer.  Once it confirms you still have a valid service warranty it should connect you to a live customer service rep.

While you are waiting for feedback from one of the other Dell SupportAssist v4.1.0.42635 users it would be helpful to know the version number of that first 134 MB Dell SupportAssist app listed at Settings | Apps | Installed Apps (see image below). NOTE: If this is a UWP app or Appx module you might have to click the ellipsis (three dots) and select "Advanced options" to see the version number.

Also let us know if Dell SupportAssist v4.1.0.42635 is the only Dell SupportAssist program listed at Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features, and if SupportAssist v4.1.0.42635 works correctly if you run manual "Update software" and "Scan Hardware" scans from the Home panel of SupportAssist.

____________________________________________

Just FYI, I uninstalled all SupportAssist-related programs from my Inspiron 5584 after my service warranty expired - they were too buggy, consumed too much RAM and CPU, and the "system optimization" scans in SupportAssist (Clean Files / Tune Performance / Optimize Network) were too aggressive and had the potential to do more harm than good.  For example, see my 12-Jul-2021 posts in ex-jedi's Prevent Automatic Recycle Bin Emptying about the over-aggressive registry cleaner included with the Tune Performance scan (now called Boost Performance in SupportAssist v4.x).

See my 08-Feb-2025 post in ygil’s BSOD Issues After Windows Updates in the Dell forum for details on how I replaced all my SupportAssist-related software with more reliable third-party apps.

Based on Valinger picture, the second Dell SupportAssist with file size 878 MB is the actual application. The first Dell SupportAssist with 134 MB is the UWP (Universal Windows Platform) app which is the UI part. Without the UWP app, SupportAssist desktop app will not be present and you will not be able to load the app.

Hi DELL-ChrisM2:

Thank you for the clarification.

Three comments, however, that you might pass on to the developers.

  • It would be less confusing if the main application and smaller UWP component had different names at Settings | Apps (i.e., as was the case with previous versions of Dell SupportAssist - see my image <above>).
  • The main SupportAssist app (878 MB) and companion UWP app (134 MB) for v4.10.1 now use more than 1 GB of disk space.  That's more than triple the size of the previous SupportAssist v3.x components shown in my image <above>, and this doesn't include the ~ 220 MB pre-requisite Microsoft .NET Desktop Runtime version 8.0.x. that must be installed to run the current v4.10.1 application.  This amount of bloat is astonishing given that there have been few, if any, improvements in the functionality of v4.x.
  • The SupportAssist v4.x Release Notes and User Guide at https://www.dell.com/support/product-details/en-us/product/dell-supportassist-pcs-tablets/resources/manuals were just updated for the current v4.10.1 (kudos to whoever did this) but there is still no mention in the Known Issues section of the Release Notes about the "We can't reach the internet" bug acknowledged by Dell in multiple topics in this forum board (see employee DELL-Nat M's 20-Oct-2025 post in ner0's Latest SupportAssist v4.10.1 - We can't reach the internet right now for one example).
