Upgrade ECC 5.2 SP5 to ECC 6.1

Hi,

What would be the better option to go for ecc 6.1 - Upgrade or new install?

Please suggest.

Hi,

It's really a matter of personal preference - do you want to preserve the current 5.2 SP5 environment? If so, then I would recommend an upgrade to 6.1.

If you do a new install, then you will obviously have to rediscover the managed objects that are in your current environment. The one major advantage that any new software install has over an upgrade is that it tends to be less problematical.

I am leaning more towards a fresh install. we do not need to retain any performance data. You mentioned to rediscover the managed data.... is this a command or is it simply the "discover connectivity" drop down on the toolbar?

Will i need to rebuild all my host names etc????

Hi,

You will have to rediscover objects (via the Discover menu) that come under the category of 'Assisted Discovery' e.g. fabrics, Clariion, Centera, Celerra etc.

Hosts will automatically appear in your new 6.1 Console once you restart the Master Agent (you can then patch the agents to 6.1). Symmetrix will automatically reappear once the relevant Symmetrix Agent(s) are restarted.

Customisation e.g. device labels, host labels will not be preserved when you do a fresh installation.

Best to read some of the 6.1 docs on Powerlink before making a final decision re fresh install vs upgrade.
