StorageScope API - Accounting for total capacity

We have a Clarion CX500 with 10,800.36 GB of total capacity.

I had expected to be able to account for the total capacity using the values in stsview.STS_Array but came up short.

I expected the following to be equal to zero:

ST_Raw 10,800.36
ST_Unconfig_Sum - 0.00
ST_System_Resource - 967.50
ST_Config_NotAssigned - 1,234.56
ST_Unallocated_Raw - 777.29
ST_Allocated_Raw - 7,240.42
                       ------------
                             580.58 <<< unaccounted for

Can anyone shed a bit of light on this?

Thank you,

Hi Philip,

In theory all the capacity should be accounted for when you did the calculation via STS API. I recommend opening a SR so that Support can look through the relevant log files as well as obtaining a copy of your ControlCenter and STS databases.

The reason the numbers don't add up exactly is that there is overhead in creating LUNs and RAID groups that is not reported to ControlCenter by the array. In fact, you will find that RAW capacity does not actually equal the sum of the drive capacities in the array for the same reason. You may lose 9 GB per drive due to overhead on a CLARiiON. The same occurs, though to a lesser extent, on a Symmetrix and I expect other array types as well.

Can someone present an equation based on the values available in StorageScope that will balance?

Here is the information from the 5.2 help regarding Total Raw Capacity for Clariion.

(Configured - Raw ) + (Unconfigured - Total ) is typically equal to Raw - Total, but it may be less depending on array overhead. For example, in a CLARiiON array, 13 GB of raw capacity is always dedicated to array software and an additional 2 to 3 percent is configuration overhead.

CLARiiON
If a physical disk in a CLARiiON RAID group fails or is removed, the capacity of that disk is no longer reported in Raw - Total. However, its capacity will still be reported as part of the RAID group in Configured - Raw and Configured - Usable .

How calculated
(Configured - Raw ) + (Unconfigured - Total )
