Some thoughts on ECC equiv software please

Greetings,

My organisation recently merged with another that uses EMC storage. Until then, we had no EMC kit and I have invested a lot of time (and effort and money and swearing) in what used to be called AppIQ as we had HDS/IBM/Sun/Stotek and HP storage. AppIQ is now called HSSM/Storage Essentials/who knows what else now. I found that someone has ordered ECC prior to the merger (not sure what parts yet) and I believe it does much the same as HSSM.

Has anyone looked at ECC and HSSM and come up with any good thougths on either. I don't want to invest lots of time in implementing ECC if it is only good for EMC kit and average for HDS in particular. HSSM now does a very good job of looking after most of my SAN environment.

Hi Stephen,

I have no experience of Hitachi HiCommand Storage Services Manager (HSSM) so I can't speak for that product.

From a ControlCenter perspective, the Storage Agent for HDS functions can be summarised as follows:

This agent allows you to monitor and explore supported Hitachi Lightning, Hewlett-Packard XP series, or Sun StoreEdge subsystems. You can also perform business continuance functionality on the subsystems. You can create, split, suspend, and resume BCVs for an HDS subsystem through the ControlCenter Console.

Here are the agent's pre-reqs:

If monitoring HP-XP subsystems, CommandView CLI must be installed on the target host and be able to communicate with the CommandView Server. Required HP-XP licenses must be entered on the CommandView Server. EMC highly recommends that you do not deploy the agent on the CommandView
Server.
If monitoring Hitachi arrays, ensure that the target host can communicate with the HiCommand Device Manager Server. EMC highly recommends that you do not deploy the agent on the HiCommand Device Manager Server.
Optimally, you should deploy Storage Agent for HDS and HiCommand Tuning Manager (HTM) on the same host, which has a TCP/IP connection to the Hitachi Raid Agent host, which has an inband connection to Hitachi arrays.
If you intend to perform configuration changes using active commands on an XP128, XP512, or XP12000 array, ensure that LUN Security Manager XP and LUN Configuration Manager XP Licenses are installed.
For secure communications, do the following:
¿ Enable SSL (https) communication on the HiCommand Server.
For non-secure communications, do the following:
¿ Disable SSL (https) communication on the HiCommand Server.

It's probably best to take a look at the ControlCenter Release Notes, Support Matrix, Planning & Installation Guide out on Powerlink. These docs will give you a better idea of what you can/cannot do with your HDS kit in ControlCenter. It might also be an idea to engage your local EMC Service Manager as he may be able to put you in touch with somebody who has worked on both CC and HSSM.

Maybe somebody else on this forum can shed some further light on HSSM too....

Hi Seamus,

Thanks for the reply. They seem to do very similar things which is what I expected. Oddly enough, I have never tried to do True Copy and/or Shadow Image manipulation with HSSM. As a matter of fact, I prefer to use the product tools rather than trust HSSM. Its probably quicker.

I wonder if I can swap what has been paid for ECC with Smarts. Now thats a fine product and Cork is a fine town too.
