Service Levels and Tiers - ControlCenter and StorageScope
Hi,
I'm looking to take advantage or the Service Level functionality in StorageScope for capacity reporting and chargeback purposes. We don't currently implement FAST, but may plan to in the future.
I see that according to the ControlCenter 6.1 Admin Guide that ControlCenter has four pre-defined service levels - Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze. You can use these service levels, edit them, or create your own.
The Service level definitions are:
Platinum Enterprise - Flash Drive, any RAID level
Gold - Fibre Channel, RAID 1
Silver - Fibre Channel, RAID 5
Bronze - SATA, any RAID level
In our environment we define tiers and charge by the following:
Tier0 - Symmetrix, Flash Drive
Tier1 - Symmetrix, FC15K
Tier2 - Symmetrix, FC 10K
Tier3 - CLARiiON
Questions
-
In StorageScope, can I delete the pre-defined service levels and create mine based on my how I clasify tiers of storage?
-
Are StorageScope Service Level definitions and ControlCenter Service level definitions one in the same?
-
Are these service definitions used for FAST as well as how I am looking to use them for capacity reporting and chargeback?
-
Where is the best place to find detailed information around Tiers and Service Levels?
Thanks.
Dave

Hi Dave,
Here are my answers to your 4 questions:
1. Yes, you can delete pre-defined service levels and create your own service levels. Your Tier0 to Tier3 can be easily created through Utilities -> Settings -> Service Levels
2. Yes. ControlCenter service level is implemented through StorageScope.
3. Yes. They are used both for FAST and general capacity reporting and chargeback. There are several built-in queries for service level like 'Array Storage by Service Level', 'Host Storage by Service Level', etc.
4. The best place to find information for tiers and service levels is in StorageScope query builder. You can look at built-in queries or create your own custom queries.
Thanks.
