Queries in Storage Scope

I would like to know if the Queries in StorageScope that are manually generated can be automated to collect reports at regular intervals? If so.....then how do I go about it?

The queries in StorageScope 6.0 are run out of the StorageScope repository which, by default, is updated once a day via the ETL process. Since most queries run pretty quickly (this of course depends on the complexity of the query), you can just run a query any time during the day to see the data for that day. This is equivalent to how StorageScope 5.2 works where the XML extraction happens once a day and you view the 5.2 reports for that day any time you want during that day.

...so final answer is that queries can't be used as "reports"? It would be nice to be able to schedule queries, to get automated reports.

Is it so that the readily made reports cannot be modified, and the only way to get something "custom made" to the reports side is to use Business Objects Crystal reports or something similar?

The query -side of STS is quite horrible, and can only report in KB's, whereas on the reports side you see GB's.

To get host by group, you need to select:
Hosts Category: Groups
Groups Category: All Groups

This will give you host by group with all capacity information.

Query builder only shows KB, to get GB, you can create custom column by click 'Manage Calculated Columns' in step 3 Select Columns page.

Another question:

On the query side, how can you create a report which shows host capacity allocations _and_ grouping information? Any time I select group and ie. host, it gives an error. Goal is to create a report which has hosts by group, and how much different storage tier capacity those are using.

Thanks,

but this kind of grouping won't help on tiered reporting, as information required involves also disk drive capacity and lun type (to get reporting for different disk and protection types).

If I understand correctly, with the grouping below, only total capacities by host will be displayed.

In query builder, under array, you can select Array, Lun and Disk, create a query. This will show you device to disk mapping, then do sub total on disk type or lun type. It will give you total capacity based on disk type or lun type.

Would you elaborate more on this? What are you trying to accomplish by scheduling queries that you can't do by just logging into StorageScope and running the query when you want to see the output? I'm purposely not guessing what I think because I want to hear what you think.

If you are referring to the built-in Crystal Reports, then the answer is that you need Crystal Reports. If you are referring to the built-in Queries, then you can copy that query and then make changes as necessary. This makes it much easier to create your own query than starting from scratch.

The StorageScope repository stores its capacity numbers in KB to maintain precision of the data. You have the opportunity to create custom columns to display a capacity in KB column in GBs or whatever units you like.

I made a bunch of queries that I use in excel for reporting tier usage of symmetrixes (tier = disk size and protection type). It is very boring to manually run each of these dozen+ queries by hand every time you want to get the results. If I these could be automated, also the end-results would be kept up-to-date automatically.

A nice thought, but when you are using the query builder a lot, it is utterly frustrating that every time you want to understand the numbers, you have to use calculator or use these calculated columns. I wonder who really wants to see KB's these days, when using big storage arrays...

And now a thing that would help me a lot, if you can give me the answer: When saving reports as .csv's with STS, every columnt gets exported as ="xxxx"

My issue is that when I import that into excel, all the fields with numbers get imported as text fields, and I have to manually change those into numbers (by copying "1", then edit -> paste special -> multiply). Is there a way of importing those as numbers into excel?

Thanks for the interaction, it is nice to get comments.

But now I lose the grouping...

What I (and probably a lot of other customers too) would like to get is:

used / free capacity on different storage tiers (disk size / protection), by groups and subsequently hosts. Group can be ie. customers, business units etc. In many cases sub-groups are also used as ECC / STS don't understand clustering (so clustered hosts will be put into sub groups)

With current STS, as far as I understand, you cannot use grouping when trying to report the above.

Certainly I imagine most users wouldn't want to see KBs. But storing in KB at the lowest level allows the most flexibility. I certainly feel STS could do better in terms of allowing users to easily customize how they view these metrics without requiring any loss of precision in the database.

This is intentional for non-numeric fields. This is because fields like Storage Array Serial Number often appear numeric but should be treated as text. By quoting them like this, Excel preserves leading zeroes. So an array with serial number "000090053" doesn't display as "90053." STS has been doing this with non-numeric fields since at least ECC 5.2.

It appears that STS is now doing it for all values, not just non-numeric ones. If that's desired behavior, it hasn't been explained to me as such.

...So the export feature has a bug...

BTW, one important question: Should the field "Lun Masked?" be yes for luns that are masked, and no for luns that are not masked?

I see that for some luns that are in reality masked, this field tells "no"...

Hi there,

did you ever get an official response to this? I am having this issue. We are trying to put a charge back process in place for our storage and we have different prices for mirrored vs raid 5 devices. I have created several groups withing ECC and I can create a query using Storage Scope using groups/all groups but I can't get device information like raid5 vs mirrored. Have you had any luck with this?
