Getting warning on SDR device mapping

When I go to map an unmapped device to a Symmetrix FA in ECC via SDR device mapping, I get a warning that says:

"Warning: access rights for the device on the target port FA-xx Port x should be added to the VCM database!"

I'm not exactly sure what this warning means...is there something I still need to do after I execute the SDR device mapping through ECC?

You are probably connecting via switched fabric with multiple hosts logging into the same ports. The FA (front-end directory with ports) needs to know, which devices should be presented to each host. This is called masking. For example, LUN 1 may be presented to Host A, LUN 2 may be presented to Host B, etc. This information is stored in VCM database. If you map a device but do not mask it, no host will be able to see it. This is what the warning implies.

Answers can be that simple. but I do get questions from new comers all the time about this warning. I think EMC could rephrase that warning into something like: "after the mapping is done, you need to mask the devices to the wwn's of the host(s) that need to have access to these devices" or something.

I agree. This looks too much like something is wrong, when it is really just a gentle reminder for the newbies.

I can still remember the first time I saw it (and we were new to DMX at the time) and I was struggling to figure out what I ad done wrong before I realized the answer: "Nothing".
