ECC Windows host agent constantly using 13% cpu in Windows 2008 64 bit

Hi,
We are currently rolling out windows 2008 64 bit and have noticed that the emc windows host agent is hogging resources. I am not sure if this is a 64 bit or 2008 issue, but the "mnragent.exe" sits at 13% cpu 24/7.

On our 32bit windows 2003 servers the "mnragent.exe" does not do hardly anything.

Host agent is version 6.0.0.0.567
ECC server is version 6.0.0.0.607

Is there a work around or update for this?

Thanks in advance

Dave

UPDATE: Our windows 2008 32 bit server seemed to show normal cpu usage from the "mnragent.exe" process. So this would confirm that it is only a 64 bit problem.

Hi Dave,
Maybe you should upgrade your agents to .589
Description: Code review revealed that there was a buffer with a static size that is used to read off the network in the agent SDK code. Code has been changed so the buffer overflow can't occur. Regards Anders

Hold on Dave,
I will install the agents on 2008 64-bit in our test environment with .589, i'll give you feedback soon. Regards Anders

Ooops, exactly the same problem occurs for me. I'll open a SR.

Cut and paste from the SR;

Though ControlCenter Host Agents can run on Windows 2008 64 Bit Host, we have found that the Performance of the Host Agent is impaired due to the IA64 Architecture being Optimized to run 64 Bit Applications. At Present ControlCenter is only written in 32 Bit code, and Intel made changes to the CPU to Optimize 64 Bit code at the expense of 32 bit code.

Eng are aware of this problem and are looking at making changes, but at present I have no time line when these will be completed. Intel also released an Application IA32-EL which should help reduce the CPU Usage of 32 Bit code on a 64 bit host.

Thanks for the update Anders.

I will check out the IA32-E application, however I would prefer engineering fix this in the next version. (wishful thinking)

Hi folks,

Please note that I have a ticket open with Engineering for this exact same issue - it's also 13% CPU for my customer!

I will update this thread once I have some feedback from Eng.

Séamus

Seamus... Any update on this? We are running ECC 6.1 update bundle 2. I have a bunch of newer 64-bit Windows 2008 servers running out there and need to be able to deploy the agents to them.

Hi all,

It looks like the fix for this issue may be released in time to make the upcoming Update Bundle 5 for CC 6.1 which is due out at the end of May.

Will update thread when I have more news.

Seamus, what about for 6.0 ECC and 2008 hosts?

John,

I haven't seen any reports of this issue with CC 6.0/Win 2008 - only at 6.1.

By the way, this issue is fixed in CC 6.1 Update Bundle which was officially released yesterday (June 17).

I am seeing it right now on several of our 2008 servers.

Still no patch for ECC 6.0.0.650? Is there an ETA on a patch release? A significant portion of our Microsoft SQL servers are Windows 2008 clusters.
