ECC 5.2 and Sym Management Console
Hello, We have a strange situation with our ECC 5.2 server (in the future we will upgrade to ECC 6). The ECC repository is on the Windows server local disk rather than on the symm array. This ECC server is not even zoned or connected to any arrray. ECC works fine because it gets it's info from agents that are running on other SAN connected servers.
Now we want to get Symmetrix Management Console installed on this ECC box to get familar with that product. I beleive we have upgraded Solutions Enabler to 6.5 to support SMC.
I've never used SMC - will it work on this server or will we need to connect/zone this server to the SAN and Symmetrix array first? I'm guessing it does not use agents like ECC.

You would need to have the server zoned to the Symmetrix you want to manage and ideallly will also allocate at least 4-8 gatekeeper devices.
Best way to think about SMC is that it is really just a GUI front-end to Solutions Enabler.

Do I need to uninstall the old version first? I think ECC 5.2 is using this older version so I'm not sure if I can just install SE 6.510 or need to stop all ECC services first. I have downloaded the SE 6.5110 msi but so far I have not been able to find installation instructions.

Just like some input. I am also in the process of installing the SMC. Like to tap on your experience. I have a similiar ECC 5.2.4. and want to install SMC. Look like you are putting ECC and SMC together, is there a conflict between the 2 application? will the ECC display info be unsync after you use EMC to map/mask disk? Appreciate you feedback.

As long as you have not modified the default scanning policies ECC will detect and rescan changes made external to it within minutes of the changes being made. There is a very slight window where you could have a discrepency between ECC and what is really on the Symmetrix, but you would have to work hard to break the timing since normally the locking mechanisms on the Symmetrix would keep you from having multiple changes going in one shot. Now if you have modified your configuration scanning policies to run very infrequently you could have more of an issue with changes not reflecting quickly.
SMC is very tied to the Solutions enabler so my only word of caution is that you need to find the right version of SMC for the versions of SE that you use with your 5.2 ECC agents. Check your Discovery policy and make sure you are not set to run only daily or twice daily (default is like 15 minutes) which would be the other concern I'd have.
Good luck

When I goto ECC and right click on the array I do not see a selection to go to SMC.

I crazy question. I just installed SMC and used the default initital user of smc. I think the password should also be smc. I'm getting login failures when I try smc for both ID and Password.
Anybody know the default password?
