common mapping agent
According to manual, common mapping agent seems be used mainly for monitor database. And it should be installed on a windows or Solaris host with no host agent installed. But what does it exactly do? How does it monitor database? Do I have to install it on the host which database resides? does SYMAPI server also need to be installed on this host?

The best information on the requirements of the Common Mapping Agent are in the ControlCenter Planning and Installation guide. In the latest release for 6.1 this information is on page 91. The agent can be installed local to the database if you like but it is more efficient when used as a proxy from a remote host. This way it can be used to discover multiple database instances on multiple hosts. Solutions Enabler must be installed on both the host with the agent and the host with the database you want to monitor. The Solutions Enabler daemons will make the calls to, and collect the data from, the database and the agent send it back to the repository. Please review the ControlCenter Planning and Installation guide, as well as Solutions Enabler documentation to install the correct daemons and options.

You may have already found this in the Controlcenter online help but the following explains what the Common Mapping Agent does.
The Common Mapping Agent allows you to discover and monitor databases and host configuration information locally on a single host or via proxy on a remote host. With this agent, Controlcenter can provide a complete link to each database file, presenting details such as where it sits on the host or on connected storage devices. The Agent can run on both Windows and Solaris and it can also detect and monitor databases on AIX and HP-UX hosts via proxy. In addition to databases, the Common Mapping Agent also enables you to discover and view host configuration and storage allocation information. The data collected includes information about file systems, logical volumes, storage devices and partitions, and volume groups.
Hope that helps,
