XPS8100 upgrade to SSD
Carried over from earlier discussion "XPS8100 need to replace hard drive - looking for alternatives"
I've been looking into the SSD option and am I correct in seeing this as an option: Samsung 850 EVO 1TB Internal Solid State Drive (MZ-75E1T0B/AM).
Any other recommended drives?
Do I understand it right that Samsung includes cloning software with the drive?
Any recommendations or warnings? I hope that the steps for cloning will be detailed in the package.
Is the 2.5" slot for this easy to find once I open the box?
Thanks!

Yes, the Samsung 850 EVO 1TB Internal Solid State Drive is backwards compatible and should work fine.
Using the 3.5" to 2.5" mounting bracket I posted a link to, the SSD should be compatible to the Studio XPS 8100 chassis.

One concern I have is whether this drive's SATA specs (SATA 6 Gb/s) are compatible (even backwards compatible) with my XPS8100's SATA 2 ports???
I'd love to buy a 1TB SSD, but of course it needs to match my box.
Thanks.
I don't know why this is not showing up in the forum . . .

Yes, you are correct, the Samsung 850 EVO 1TB Internal Solid State Drive shown in your link will work fine, also I've found that Crucial SSD's are excellent.
Yes, cloning software is included.

To mount the 2.5" SSD in the Studio XPS 8100, you will need a 3.5" x 2.5" mounting bracket, similar to this:

Thanks Bev, for all the help. I bought the SSD today. With a relatively painless process I swapped and cloned my HDD to the new SSD and I'm literally flying through cyberspace. Can't believe I didn't look into this sooner.
Some of the super-features of this SATA 3 drive are not available because of my outdated motherboard and SATA 2 ports, but hey, who said life was perfect.
Ciao,
Frank :-)
